Is 'Tomb Raider' Going to See New Theatrical Life?

More than just a rumor now...

A couple of days ago some little blip of a rumor regarding Megan Fox as a potential successor to Angelina Jolie as the new Lara Croft in the Tomb Raider franchise surfaced. Sorry, I don't remember where it started, but rumors are something I don't typically like to deal in all that much anymore and it seemed rather silly anyway.

However, The Hollywood Reporter is now saying there is new life in the franchise with Warner Bros. and producer Dan Lin are in early development on a reboot of the Lara Croft franchise, but the report does come without any mention of Fox.

Paramount released the first two films which starred Jolie as the titular daredevil archaeologist who punches sharks and wears revealing skin tight outfits all while kicking plenty of ass. Rights to the franchise reverted back to Eidos, the publisher of the videogame the films are based on, and when Time Warner upped its stake to 19.92% in Eidos in December, films rights to the property were included as part of the deal.

The new project is expected to revamp the character and her mission and bear little resemblance to the original pictures. It will reimagine the origins of the character, her love interest and the main villain.

There is no writer or director involved at the moment and until such movement happens only then is an actress expected to get involved.

I already hate Hollywood's fascination with remakes and reboots, but now that we're dusting off franchises less than a decade old (and one that wasn't exactly beloved at that) I'm officially becoming frustrated. Angelina was pretty much the sole reason the films got the attention they did in the first place and with the Tomb Raider license no longer a factor in the videogame realm anymore what's the point?

"Cradle of Life" made just over half of it's budget back in America and barely gained profit overseas (info courtesy of a wikipedia search, I don't keep this information on hand) so it's not exactly a blockbuster property to begin with. Plus, nothing Megan Fox has done shows any inherent acting ability except for the ever popular eye candy attribute. Putting her as a femme fatale (for lack of another overused cliche) would probably sell some posters but not exactly create quality cinema.

Who the hell am I kidding, that's pretty much what they're going for. Whatever, I give up.

I'm in for a Tomb Raider reboot. The first two movies were bad, really bad, but there's big potential in the franchise. Lara Croft is a very good action heroine and we don't have too many like her out there (too bad) but she could be the next big thing if somebody just give her a god damn good movie!

I mean, it's tragic when you play the recent Tomb Raider videogames and you see wonderful storyline (the last one was even nominated for this year WGA awards!) but the movies can't do the same and must give Lara 'daddy issues'. It's the end of the world when games have better scripts than movies, let's face it…

And I think Angelina Jolie is fantastic as Lara (she is a great action actress, period) but if they're going to reboot the franchise, we need a new actress (not Megan Fox, PLEASE). We must forget the former movies happened. That's what a reboot's for. Sorry Angie.

I enjoyed the Tomb Raider films and as much as I dislike AJ as a "celebrity", she did do a great job of bring Lara Croft to the screen. A good story and the casting someone equally capable of convincing as an action heroine and they could be on to a winner. However, Megan Fox was barely tolerable in Transformers and Jessica Alba has already done a great job of demonstrating – Into The Blue, The Eye, Awake, etc… – that being a beautiful poster girl is not enough to carry a film.

Fox is Hot. She would be a perfect Lara. I liked the first two, I would be happy if Jolie was to continue with it.

Can`t imagine Tomb Raider without Jolie, she`s perfect in it……
But, let`s see….
(But no Megan Fox though, i think it will be miscasted if they`ll go with Megan fox)

I'm not a 13-year-old boy so, the news of a new Tomb Raider doesn't exactly have me all excited. However, Meghan Fox is definitely born to play this role – she has the specific…umm…qualifications.
