'Iron Man' a Complete Failure! Everyone Stayed Home and Played 'Grand Theft Auto IV'

Oh, wait, that was just a stupid story

Did you see all those stupid speculation stories wondering if the release of Rockstar Games' "Grand Theft Auto IV" would deter people from going and seeing Iron Man? As if these people were so dedicated to a video game they just couldn't take 3 hours out of their day to see the second most anticipated superhero movie of the year (Dark Knight is #1 and I will thumb wrestle anyone that says otherwise).

Well, they left the house… in droves. Fantasy Moguls is reporting Iron Man made an estimated $5.2 million Thursday night alone and an additional $35 million on Friday. The new projection for the weekend… $91-95 million.

The mid-90 million dollar figure though won't have Iron Man beating Spider-Man 3's opening of $151 million, which kick started last year's summer, but it will topple the Transformers opening of $70 million. Both films went on to make well over $300 million and based on the 94% RottenTomatoes rating, Iron Man could be a major contender for the top spot at the box-office for 2008.

Made of Honor comes in second on Friday with an estimated $5.5 million and the rest is downhill from there.

Below are the complete Friday numbers, stay tuned, tomorrow Laremy will be here to wrap up the entire weekend.

  1. Iron Man (Paramount) – $35 million
  2. Made of Honor (Sony) – $5.5 million
  3. Baby Mama (Universal) – $3.5 million
  4. Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo (Warner Bros) – $2 million
  5. Forgetting Sarah Marshall (Universal) – $1.7 million
  6. The Forbidden Kingdom (Lionsgate) – $975,000
  7. Prom Night (Sony) – $720,000
  8. Nim’s Island (Fox) – $620,000
  9. 21 (Sony) – $570,000
  10. 88 Minutes (Sony) – $390,000

Well, the film execs are confident that Halo 3 affected ticket sales for the HeartBreak Kid…or could have just been the fact that that movie sucks…

Strangely enough, it's virtually the same studio that released both considering Dreamworks and Paramount are joined at the hip. And Paramount basically said the GTA IV factor was a "non-issue".
