'Iron Man 2' and '3' Details as Longoria is Rumored as Wasp in 'Avengers'

Apparently this is the most important news out there...

Last week Jon Favreau held a press conference to promote the release of Iron Man on DVD and Blu-ray hitting shelves on September 30. I just reviewed the Blu-ray version right here, but the first film isn't the news. Nope, no one cares about that. The first Iron Man is old news. Been there, done that, buy it when it hits the shelves and forget about it. How about that sequel? Gimme trilogy news! I want to know what is next so I can complain about how right, wrong and indifferent I may be. Well, that's what I've got.

Favreau broke down the franchise and his plans for Iron Man 2 and beyond as Devin Faraci at CHUD gives us the run down and he even got some DIGGs for it and perhaps shared a "tweet" or two.

What we know is that the script is being worked on in collaboration with Justin Theroux and Robert Downey Jr.

Favreau wants War Machine in the next film, a character that takes over for Iron Man after Tony Stark lapses into alcoholism and is best known as James "Rhodey" Rhodes, the character played by Terrence Howard.

The Mandarin is the overarching, behind the scenes villain of Favreau's planned trilogy and was compared to the Emperor from the Star Wars trilogy. Apparently he wants to keep the Mandarin grounded however and fans shouldn't expect him to be in robes jumping around shooting freeze rays. Such a character was compared to the new Mummy film in which Favreau said, "hey had The Mandarin and Fin Fang Foom!"

Favreau compared the Iron Man story to the one told in The Dark Knight saying he wants to complicate the characters and not the plot. To him it's about the characters first and the stories should be simple and fun. I was happy to hear Favreau is aware the end battle in Iron Man wasn't that spectacular and he's looking to really up the ante on the action next time. What proves he learned what makes good action is that he shot my favorite action sequence in the film (when Iron Man shoots the hostage takers in the desert) last.

He referred to his trilogy as one big story as opposed to a bunch of separate stories and says the comicbook storyline "Demon in a Bottle" is coming even though there was some early concern due to the alcoholic nature of Will Smith's Hancock stealing the thunder.

He did talk a bit about the Avengers film in which several Marvel superheroes team-up together including Hulk, Captain America and Thor. Reality is an important factor to Favreau in this world and he isn't too sure about where Thor fits into that world. I guess giant green monsters are a different story, but I do wonder what he would think about the latest stories involving Eva Longoria.

A story that began with some pictures from Flawed Hollywood featuring Longoria leaving Marvel Comics offices on Friday, September 12 carrying a batch of comics with "The Avengers" prominently seen on top has led to online speculation and hatred at the idea of Longoria being involved in the proposed team-up and an idea she may be eyeing the part of Janet Van Dyne, the winsome Wasp, a founding member of the Marvel super team and eventual wife of Hank Pym, the Ant-Man.

Of course, no one knows anything at all, but it seems fan outcry does not bode well for the actress's chance to land the role should she have been interested. After all, if online fans are taken seriously at any time it is in relation to comic book movies.

I was hoping to give you some opinion of what folks around the Internet are saying on the subject, but all mouths are mum. It seems many of the online websites have stopped giving their opinion, which makes me sort of sad as the world of online movie reporting is slowly turning into a large number of news aggregators as opposed to a group of websites run by people that actually like movies. I guess my opening paragraph rings true just as much for the news givers as it does for the takers.

If you ask me Eva Longoria is not the one to play any role. She is a one note soap opera actress that works just fine in "Desperate Housewives" but I can assure you her involvement in a comic book feature is not what fanboys are looking for. Just look at how pitiful it was when Fox cast a pretty face in Fantastic Four and completely disregarded the ability to act.

Marvel is onto something with the idea of The Avengers and I hope they don't go screwing it up by trying to appeal to the gossip crowd.
