This is the kind of performance spoofed so well in Tropic Thunder in which big a Hollywood star plays a "differently abled" person , but not "the full retard." I thought Pacino should have won the other Oscar he nominated for that year, supporting actor in Glengarry Glen Ross. I actually like Scent of a Woman better now than I did at the time. I love this movie. Great work by Pacino, screenwriter Bo Goldman and director Martin Brest. Many great scenes in this movie (Al's introduction, his hotel breakdown, the Thanksgiving dinner scene to name a few) but this is the best. Some people complain Pacino was over-the-top in this movie.
