'Ice Age 3' Bests 'Transformers 2' With $13.8 Million Opening

Is it one and done for Michael Bay's robots?

Well, box-office prognosticators are going to have their hands full this weekend trying to decide if Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs will be able to take the top spot ensuring Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen only enjoys one weekend at the top. Early estimates have the third film in the animated franchise getting off to a promising start with an estimated $13.8 million on its opening day (via Variety), besting Revenge of the Fallen's $10.9 million by almost $4 million. Of course, I don't think Paramount/Dreamworks are shedding any tears with the film having now reached $240 million domestically and over $450 million worldwide.

The other big weekend film is Universal's Public Enemies, which is certainly having an effect on everyone that sees it, both negative and positive, and appears to be off to a pretty good start with an estimated $8 million on Wednesday, but will word-of-mouth kill it or help it hold on for a strong five-day opener? Going to be interesting.

If you've seen Public Enemies already head on over to my review and add your opinion in the comments. I'm curious to see where everyone else falls on this film. Click here to join in the conversation.

Here we are comparing a movie in it's mid second week (Transformers) to a movie on it's opening day (Ice Age 3). If we want to compare movies we can compare where Ice Age stands on it's mid next week. But as for opening days can we really compare the Ice Age debut of 14 million to Transformers debut of 62 million? I don't think so. This is hardly a debate for analysts. I predict Ice age getting crushed this weekend if it's weak opening day is any sign of it's box office to come.

What happened to the previous comments?
You know, the ones where Vince bests Transformers Defender with literary knowledge and facts.

FROM BRAD: It got a little too off topic. :)

@John: The comparison is not regarding openings or overall performance, it's regarding the most recent Wednesday receipts and the resulting implications leading into this upcoming weekend.

I'd definitely still take Transformers 2 over Ice Age whatever. That's what I'll be seeing this weekend, anyways.

I am guessing the previous posts were deleted because they were both acting like children. Vince may have had a point but he needlessly attacked Transformers Defender when he could have just corrected him with facts.

And GregM I do understand what you mean by your statement. But in order to do an honest comparison you have to look at the fact that Transformers destroyed on it's opening day, Ice age did not. Just looking at the fact of Wednesdays box office is not enough for resulting implications coming into the weekend. You have to look at how long the movie has been out as well. So of course Transformers was bound to dip below another movie on it's opening day. Anyway the only real point I want to get across is that Ice Age had a weak open and I don't think It's going to have the steam to topple Transformers this weekend, But I guess we will see in a few days.

Yeah I was acting a bit childish, I admit. Just making sure that the facts were out there though- you know how intense discussions on the interwebs can get.

FROM BRAD: Understandable since the comments that came from the other side were completely misguided. :)

Um…"Ice Age" is performing like (or a little bit less than) "Night at the Museum 2" right? So is that the ceiling for them? Like $70 million or so in 5 days? Because that's not that great, considering the second film made that number in 3. And this includes the 3D upcharges and the lack of competition for the family.

Still, I'm pulling for it to win the weekend, just because…well, I'm pretty sure you know my thoughts about "Transformers".

i want ice age 3 to win. Because it's very funny than dumb transformer 2! The plot of transformers 2 is the dumbest and boring!
