'Hulk' Helmer Set for 'Strays' and Eva Mendes is 'Bad'

Also Kasdan writing 'Robotech' and Ashmore set to 'Thaw'

Eva Mendes
Eva Mendes Up for Herzog's Lieutenant: Eva Mendes is in negotiations to join Nicolas Cage in Werner Herzog's remake Bad Lieutenant for Nu Image/Millennium Films. The 1992 original pic starred Harvey Keitel as a corrupt cop investigating a nun's rape. Filming will begin in late summer with a script from Billy Finkelstein. Hopefully Mendes and Cage show better onscreen chemistry than they did in the shit pile Ghost Rider. [Variety]

Louis Letterier May Helm Strays: Louis Letterier may become a hot commodity now that he made the successful superhero feature The Incredible Hulk as he is now in negotiations to develop and direct Strays, an eco action thriller written by Michael Ross, at Summit Entertainment. Of course, Summit is where cheap films go to be made so moving from The Transporter to Unleashed to Hulk obviously doesn't go too far. In Strays, a group of young consultants on a business trip to Russia mysteriously wake up in an abandoned and radioactive city and fight to survive the deadly obstacles in between them and safety. Kasdan Writes Robotech: Originally reported by CHUD.com, we learn that Lawrence Kasdan (The Empire Strikes Back and Raiders of the Lost Ark) will be writing a feature film adaptation of the anime classic "Robotech" for Warner Bros. "Robotech" takes place at a time when Earth has developed giant robots from the technology on an alien spacecraft that crashed on a South Pacific isle. Mankind is forced to use the technology to fend off three successive waves of alien invasions. The first invasion centers on a battle with a race of giant warriors who seek to retrieve their flagship's energy source known as "protoculture," and the planet's hope for survival ends up in the hands of two young pilots. If you think this is a good idea based on the movies Kasdan wrote in parens above also consider he wrote and directed Dreamcatcher and Wyatt Earp. Sorry for letting the air out of your balloon fanboys. [THR]

Aaron Ashmore Set to Thaw: Who is Aaron Ashmore? Outside of being some dude that helped me put four news bits into this recap rather than just three, he has been cast in the indie feature The Thaw, opposite Martha MacIsaac and Val Kilmer. The film is about an Arctic research team attacked by a killer parasite released by melting polar ice caps. Ashmore will play a college student in the besieged crew. Shooting begins in Vancouver today. [THR]
