Hey Folks Celebrity On Set Blow-Ups aren't Uncommon

And you thought Christian Bale was bad

I just saw Werner Herzog's Fitzcarraldo on January 26 and have yet to watch Herzog's documentary My Best Fiend: Klaus Kinski but have always known about this special little clip from it and felt now was probably the best time to bring it to the table as Klaus Kinski has his own on set tantrum. Both Fitzcarraldo and My Best Fiend: Klaus Kinski are available on NetFlix Instant Play in case you are interested. Roger Ebert, whom I believe is good friends with Herzog, has a great review of Fitzcarraldo here, it really is a one-in-a-million kind of film.

On top of that I bring you the infamous Lily Tomlin and David O. Russell vids from the set of I Heart Huckabees as well as a remix of Bale's blow-up as found at Hollywood-Elsewhere.

I've found the whole Bale firestorm to be very interesting. It appears that many people are quick to judge Bale on a few minutes of audio, and of course using the anonymity provided by the internet to go about bashing him in a level that far surpasses his rant. As an architecture student, I myself have had far far worse said to me and to fellow classmates by instructors and visiting critics, and a few times the instructor was correct for going off the handle. I'm not saying that he didn't overeact, but come on people, we all can get hot under the collar once in a while. I once told a co-worker to fuck off, and I still kept the job.

@31: You know what I think? I think you are too quick to run to the aid of actors/actresses that you love and admire. Had this bit of crap proceeded from the mouth of a nobody – say Gary Busey, you might be a little harsher in your judgement.

As a fellow student – I've never put up with a teacher abusing me in the way you have described; perhaps you should have a chat with you professor.

@Quake82: You missed my point. Why are we judging one way or the other based off a few minute rant taken out of context? I never said that I was defending Bale, in fact I mentioned in my comment that he overreacted. I was merely trying to point out that anyone, whether an actor, professor, or coworker, when under stressful situations can turn into a complete dick. That doesn't mean we should condemn the person for eternity because of it. And you obviously haven't sat through a studio crit, otherwise you would understand how students and professors can get into yelling matches. It happens, and sometimes the guy is an asshole and sometimes he's just having a bad day, all I'm saying is don't be so quick to judge.

Brad – you should watch Burden of Dreams, a doc on the making of Fitzcarraldo. It's full of on set craziness.

i think if i were put under the same scrutiny and schedule as some of these actors and someone did or said something *kinda* off while i was trying to work, i wouldn't put it past myself to at least bitch loudly at/to someone and hit and kick shit over, though i'm totally immature when it comes to accepting disappointment myself.
these people have to get into a certain frame of mind to hit all the subtle shit in performance and i would imagine that it'd be ridiculously frustrating on little sleep/ multiple takes, etc. These people can get away with it because they've reached the safe zone in their career, bale isn't going to be blacklisted! that said, douchebaggery should never be tolerated in the workplace regardless of fault, rank or your fucking clout.

With everyone in an uproar about people loosing their cool and throwing a fit, regardless if it was necessary or not, always keep this quote in your head, especially if the rant is directed at you …

"Do you know what I miss? Big League Chew."

Thank you, Peter.

When Lily Tomlin says "That's right. Fuck you too!", who was she yelling at? Who laughed in the back seat? Naomi Watts?

I think everyone is making too much of a big deal about Bale's outburst. These things happen all the time as I understand it. What makes this case rare is that it saw the light of day. Also, according to what I read somewhere else, the guy Bale is yelling at had ruined a couple of other takes doing the same thing because he's a "light tinkerer" as he was described in the other article. There is always more to a story, but in this age of instant media coverage everyone likes to come to instant conclusions. Everyone needs to keep in mind if you cherry pick the right recordings you can make Hitler seem like a saint and FDR the bane of the world.

I feel sorry for him it's been made public. I hope there's no cameras when I lose it at work or in the home. Some one should be done for leaking this. He'll be able to sue them back to cave man status. That dance re-mix is amazing though, I hope he sees the funny side of it too.
