Helmer Found for Possible Tom Cruise Political Drama

Von Donnersmarck is certainly a director of quality

If you haven't seen the 2007 Foreign Language Oscar-winner The Lives of Others do yourself a favor and add it to your NetFlix queue, it was the last film helmed by German helmer Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck and it is fantastic. Von Donnersmarck hasn't directed a film, however, since and it looks like he is going to follow in the shoes of another breakout German helmer, Oliver Hirschbiegel (Downfall), and head to Warner Bros. for his English language debut and he may be bringing Tom Cruise along for the ride.

Variety reports Von Donnersmarck is in talks to direct The 28th Amendment a film that at one time had Aussie helmer Phillip Noyce attached to direct and was said to be a victim of the writers strike. It is also said to be one of the films Tom Cruise is eying as a potential next feature even though Variety didn't include it in their impromptu Cruise preview a couple of weeks ago.

Star Trek scribes Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are rewriting the feature which revolves around a U.S. president who discovers the existence of a secret cabal that runs the government and wants him dead.

As interesting as this film sounds I am hoping Cruise makes The Matarese Circle his next film as he is said to be co-starring with Denzel Washington with David Cronenberg directing. That film is an adaptation of a Robert Ludlum ("The Bourne Identity") novel.

@dj karate: That's what I wrote so your expectation is right on the money.

I bet Cruise's stellar German accent in Valkyrie is what sold Von Donnersmarck on directing him…
