'Hangover'? 'Nine'? What Films Should be Nominated for Golden Globes Comedy/Musical?

Why not have a little fun for a minute?

Okay, so when other sites started passing around the above advertisement Warner Bros. put together to beg for a Golden Globe nomination for The Hangover in the category of best comedy or musical I didn't think much of it. I mean, there isn't a news story there, but then Sasha over at Awards Daily suggested a list of possible contenders to go along with The Hangover and it got me to thinking… Could we actually look at the Golden Globes and think of them as important as opposed to just a fun night of watching celebrities get drunk and pat themselves on the back?

Personally, the Globes are a lot of fun to watch, but I've never thought they meant all that much, even though each year I use the Globe results to help us predict the Oscars (last year's update). But the idea of discussing the Comedy/Musical category interests me today so I'm rolling with it.

Sasha offered up It’s Complicated, Julie & Julia, The Hangover, Nine, 500 Days of Summer and In the Loop

To this I've added Pirate Radio, The Informant!, The Men Who Stare at Goats and A Serious Man.

Yes, A Serious Man is in the Comedy/Musical category as confirmed by the Gold Derby and An Education, Inglourious Basterds, Crazy Heart and Up In the Air are competing in Drama as confirmed by In Contention.

So, with all that said, submit your answers in the poll and let's see how things shake out. My predictions right now are as follows:

  • 500 Days of Summer
  • The Hangover
  • In the Loop
  • It's Complicated
  • Nine

As for predicting a winner… Having not seen It's Complicated or Nine that's a bit tough. So far, In the Loop is the funniest film of the year and considering this is the Hollywood Foreign Press we're talking about perhaps that gives the film a benefit, but the juice behind The Hangover is worth paying attention to and if Nine is as good as I hope it is it will be a sure lock. However, let's see how the polling ends up and which title rises to the top based on your thoughts.

Obviously this is early in the game and I will be posting polls once all the films have been released and discussed, but I thought this would be a fun conversation to bring to the table.

I can only vote for one on the poll, I can't choose 5.
My nominee predictions:

500 Days of Summer
A Serious Man
In the Loop
It's Complicated
Nine

Come to think of it… what about Funny People? It's not the best comedy this year but I wouldn't be surpised if the studio pushed for that one

My idealistic wish list would be,

Nine
In the Loop
A Serious Man
Adventureland
(500) Days of Summer

It wouldn't kill me to see Julie & Julia make the cut. But it would be pretty painful to see any of those other mediocre titles burp up to the surface.

@Ryan Adams and @Doofy: Apologies on the poll only allowing you to vote on one title. Go ahead and vote over again. For some reason my admin screws this up every time, but it's good to go now.

As long as In the Loop gets in, I could care less about the best.

What about THE PROPOSAL? The film made 164 million dollars this summer in the US so obviously people liked it and thought it was funny.

I loved 500 days of Summer but I have a feeling that it will get overlooked by just about everything this season.

I don't think Funny People will get a nom for best picture in that category, but if James Franco can snag a nom for best actor in a comedy/musical, there's no reason why Adam Sandler can't.

Something that bothers me. You put The Men Who Stare At Goats in the poll and not Funny People. Yet, Funny People has a higher tomatometer rating than that, and you gave Funny People a higher grade than that also.

My 1 question – where is INGLORIOUS BASTERDS?! I swear that was the funniest thing I've seen in cinemas all year! In my opinion, it should hands-down win this category!

@Sherezade Patel, seeing as it is more war-ish, they've entered it in the Drama category.

The Hangover
In The Loop
Julie & Julia
The Men Who Stare At Goats
Nine

Funny People should have been entered, as was Old Dogs, Zombieland, I Love You Man and i guess Year One, it was kinda funny

The Informant! was so un-funny. It was Matt Damon's worst performance ever!

And Brad Brevet, where is Funny People??!!

The Hangover
Funny People

Funny People was DAMN AMAZING. Time will vindicate this movie, I feel. People just were expecting all the wrong things from this movie, and when they got something they weren't expecting, they couldn't process it. What a shame.

You should do one of these for Actor/Actress.

Matt Damon and Daniel Day-Lewis seem like locks for Actor. The rest could come from this list:

Paul Rudd (I Love You, Man)
John Karsynisk (Away We Go)
Adam Sandler (Funny People)
Joseph Gordon-Levitt ((500) Days of Summer)
Baldwin/Martin (It's Complicated)
George Clooney (Men Who Stare at Goats)

For Actress, I would say Meryl Streep (Julie and Julia) and Zooey Deschanel ((500) Days of Summer) look like locks for nominations. The rest is kind of a mystery to me, since I'm assuming all of the females from Nine will be considered supporting. Other nominations could possibly come from:

Maya Rudolph (Away We Go)
Sandra Bullock (The Proposal)
???

Nine may come out too late to be eligible.

The Hangover will win if any comedy wins it.

@Kevin: John Karsynisk? Don't you mean John Krasinski?

Anyway, I wouldn't consider Daniel Day-Lewis a lock. Early word is that he's outshined by the females.
