'Hancock 2' Scripters, Tatum Goes Roman, Banks Joins Crowe 'Next' and More

Justin Theroux joins 'Your Highness' and Van Sant is 'Restless'

Columbia has hired scribes Adam Fierro and Glen Mazzara to pen Hancock 2, the sequel to the 2008 Will Smith superhero movie, which grossed $624 million worldwide last year despite terrible reviews. Plot details are being kept under wraps, although original director Peter Berg hinted recently saying, "There might be another god out there… Might be another one." Both Smith and Berg are expected to return. [THR / SCI FI WIRE]

Yesterday morning Focus sent out a press release announcing the start of production on Kevin MacDonald's (State of Play) Roman epic adventure The Eagle of the Ninth and along with it came word Channing Tatum, Donald Sutherland and Mark Strong were joining Jamie Bell in the feature which is set in the dangerous world of second-century Britain. In 140 AD, twenty years after the unexplained disappearance of the entire Ninth Legion in the mountains of Scotland, young centurion Marcus Aquila (Tatum) arrives from Rome to solve the mystery and restore the reputation of his father, the commander of the Ninth. Accompanied only by his British slave Esca (Bell), Marcus sets out across Hadrian's Wall into the uncharted highlands of Caledonia – to confront its savage tribes, make peace with his father's memory, and retrieve the lost legion's golden emblem, the Eagle of the Ninth. Mr. Sutherland portrays Marcus' uncle Aquila, who has retired in Britain; Mr. Strong is cast as Guern, an ex-soldier who holds crucial information about the Ninth.

Elizabeth Banks is in final negotiations to star opposite Russell Crowe in Lionsgate's The Next Three Days, Paul Haggis' adaptation of the French thriller Pour elle, which centers on an ordinary couple who find themselves in an unthinkable situation and have to make desperate choices that will test the limits of love. [Variety]

Justin Theroux joins Danny McBride, James Franco, Natalie Portman and Zooey Deschanel as the villain of David Gordon Green's comedy Your Highness for Universal. The film, which is shooting in Ireland, centers on an arrogant, lazy prince (McBride) who must complete a quest to save his father's kingdom. Theroux will play Leezar, an evil wizard with a bejeweled magical staff who kidnaps a princess (Deschanel). [THR]

Gus van Sant is in negotiations with Columbia to develop and direct Restless, an original screenplay by first-time screenwriter Jason Lew. The logline is being kept under wraps, though it is described as contemporary and distinctive take on young love. [THR]

Why Tatum because he is the man for the job that's why – silly question.

In terms of movies, don't know about you but I always put my trust in a G.I. Joe – Duke word up.

Chan is going to own this movie when it comes out and the rest of the cast is amazing too, this is truly big.

I think people will see him in a different light and he will move to the next level in his career in terms of acting for the better.

Before anyone says anything, yes, he can already act hence he is picking up all the decent acting roles (carry on please carry on) every young Hollywood actor would die for especially with the Directors that he is working with; when you think about it, he is not stupid is he?

There is only so much an agent can do but the Directors and audience love him (picking up more support each day) not all but most and the rest I think they will be turn around in quick time especially in this film and other future projects.

Chan is the Man and will continue to be the Man!

Fighting didn't suck, I really loved it. Looking forward to getting the DVD, the soundtrack is off the hook, you must listen.

Chan Tatum has come a long way in a short amount of time and shocked a few people hence the hating – no need. I think some people think he came out of no where and suddenly everything is about the Tatum lately, hence the shock.

Well that's what happens when a Star is rising into a Superstar (deal with it).

Chan Tatum is going to be around for a long time I predict. Especially, if he keeps picking the right movie roles and working with the right Directors too in terms of helping him fine tune is craft the right way!

I guess we all have to start from somewhere but it is where you end up in the end that shows your strength even with haters at your heels you can still succeed in life with a little help and guidance from above.

Gosh, hurry up I can't wait to see this movie, the director alone pulled me in.

@ddurden33: (Ignoring the fan adulation from post #3. We all have moments like that about a particular actor but it is embarrassing to watch. Good for you Marcus Aquila. Takes guts.) Whether Channing Tatum is a good choice for this film or not depends upon which Channing are we going to see. Is it the absolutely stunning level of intensity from "A Guide to Recognizing Our Saints"? Is it going to be the combination of physical and emotive performance from "Stop-Loss"? Or is it going to be the kiddy pool level of performance from "Fighting" and "G I Joe"? Channing Tatum's strength is his physicality. I'm not talking about how purty he is. I'm talking about how much of his performance is contained within his body language and movement. Kimberly Peirce who directed "Stop-Loss" compared it to Cary Grant's stage presence. If he can get the right director, and the right character, I think he could really excel.
