Gore Verbinski Tapped to Direct Board Game Based Adaptation of 'Clue'

Apparently loosely based stories are all the rage

Movies based on board games appear to be all the rage with folks like Ridley Scott set to direct a "Monopoly" adaptation and Kevin Lima ready to direct Etan Cohen's adaptation of "Candyland" and now we learn of yet another stab at turning Hasbro's "Clue" is in the works with Pirates of the Caribbean helmer Gore Verbinski attached to direct for Universal. "Clue" was adapted for the screen back in 1985 with the Jonathan Lynn directed film that starred Christopher Lloyd and Tim Curry. The film bombed at the box-office with poor reviews and a $14 million return.

The board game is a murder mystery scenario centered on six suspects, six possible murder weapons and nine rooms in an unnamed mansion. Players seek clues to solve the crime. Was it Colonel Mustard in the Conservatory with the Revolver? Or did Miss Scarlet commit the crime in the Library with the Candlestick?

The 1985 film was a black comedy and it sounds like the Verbinski installment will be going the exact opposite direction and expanding the storyline greatly as Verbinski's Blind Wink production house senior VP Jonathan Krauss called the adaptation "A global thriller and transmedia event that uses deductive reasoning as its storytelling engine."

Clue will not be Verbinski's next film as he will direct the videogame adaptation Bioshock first, also at Universal.
