Golden Globe Winners vs. Oscars: The 2009 Update!

Things are never as guaranteed as they seem...

Photo: AMPAS / HFPA

It's that time of year again folks as the Golden Globe winners have been announced and there were certainly some surprises and that's what makes this little yearly feature so much fun. Just how often do the Golden Globe winners match up with the eventual Oscar winners? Can they be used to determine who will go home with the golden knight or are they best left to figure out who won't be going home with hardware from the Academy? Luckily, I am making it easier for you to figure that out for yourself as I bring you the latest update to my "Globes vs. Oscars" column, something I have done for the last few years (2005, 2007, 2008).

This will take a look at how the past 24 years of Golden Globe winner history compare to the Oscars. Will this give you an idea of who will win? Let's see…

Best Supporting Actor and Actress
Supporting Actor: 13 of the last 24 Globe winners won the Oscar
Supporting Actress: 12 of the last 24 Globe winners won the Oscar

Last night Kate Winslet (The Reader) and Heath Ledger (The Dark Knight) took home the Golden Globes for Supporting Actress and Actor. I think we all know Heath is going to win the Oscar, but what about Winslet? I mean, she has come out of nowhere in the past week (much to my delight) as Penelope Cruz (Vicky Cristina Barcelona) has long been thought the front runner with Viola Davis (Doubt) the runner-up. Hell, Marisa Tomei, Taraji P. Henson and Amy Adams got more recognition than Winslet did until last week and now look at her… Does this mean she will be looking Oscar in the face?

Based on the number you see above I would say her chances don't look too good and personally I still think Davis and Cruz are ahead of her in this category in the Academy's eyes. However, one thing that has been accomplished so far is she is now in line for a nomination, which was iffy until this past week.

Best Lead Actor and Actress
Actor: 15 of the last 24 Globe winners won the Oscar
Actress: 19 of the last 24 Globe winners won the Oscar

This is where we find the helpful addition of what amounts to ten nominees per category and two chances for Oscar to pick a winner out of the Golden Globe crop thanks to the HFPA's Drama and Musical/Comedy distinctions. I am always surprised this isn't a 100% match, but that's the great thing about movies… not everyone has the same opinion.

Based on last night's ceremonies we have two names to consider for Best Actor: Colin Farrell (In Bruges) and Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler). I can tell you right now Farrell will not be winning the Oscar, nor do I believe he will be nominated, which leaves Mickey. Mickey is battling with Sean Penn (Milk) first and foremost and I personally believe Clint Eastwood is about to push hard with folks like DiCaprio, Langella, Pitt and Jenkins hot their heels. I still think Penn is a slight favorite, and the 62% win ratio from Globe to Oscar doesn't have me convinced.

Moving to the ladies we have a VERY intriguing race going on as Kate Winslet won for Revolutionary Road and Sally Hawkins won for Happy-Go-Lucky. I have long had Winslet as #3 behind Meryl Streep (Doubt) and Anne Hathaway (Rachel Getting Married), but now I stare at a 79.1% Globe to Oscar win ratio and I have to start wondering: Will Kate Winslet sweep the Oscars?

The last two years have been a 100% match with Helen Mirren and Forest Whitaker winning in 2007 and Daniel Day-Lewis and Marion Cotillard winning in 2008. Oh baby what a race!

Best Director
16 of the last 24 Globe winners won the Oscar

Danny Boyle vs. David Fincher, take your pick because that's what we are down to and Danny Boyle comes with a 66.6% Globe to Oscar win percentage in his favor. Before last year the Oscars had matched the Globes for four straight years, is it time to start a new streak?

Below are a list of the instances in the last 24 years where the winners didn't match up:

  • The Globe went to Julian Schnabel (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly) and Joel and Ethan Coen (No Country for Old Men) took home the Oscar in 2008.
  • The Globe went to Martin Scorsese (Gangs of New York) and Roman Polanski (The Pianist) took home the Oscar in 2003.
  • The Globe went to Robert Altman (Gosford Park) and Ron Howard (A Beautiful Mind) took home the Oscar in 2002.
  • The Globe went to Ang Lee (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) and Steven Soderbergh (Traffic) took home the Oscar in 2000.
  • The Globe went to Milos Forman (The People vs. Larry Flynt) and Anthony Minghella (The English Patient) took home the Oscar in 1997.
  • The Globe went to Oliver Stone (JFK) and Jonathan Demme (Silence of the Lambs) took home the Oscar in 1992.
  • The Globe went to Clint Eastwood (Bird) and Barry Levinson (Rain Man) took home the Oscar in 1989.
  • The Globe went to John Huston (Prizzi's Honor) and Sydney Pollack (Out of Africa) took home the Oscar in 1986.

A 70.8% Globe to Oscar win percentage is pretty good odds for Slumdog Millionaire as I think we can all agree Vicky Cristina Barcelona won't be winning any Oscars. While I personally think Benjamin Button is more of an Academy type film it is beginning to look like 2009 will finally be the year the "little guy" goes all the way after Little Miss Sunshine and Juno paved the way.

So there you have it folks, the nominations for the 81st Academy Awards® will be announced on Thursday, January 22, 2009, at 5:30 a.m. PT with the big show taking place on Sunday, February 22, 2009. I would have a new respect for the Oscars if Benjamin Button won best picture, upsetting Slumdog. It was way way better!

Well, ADU, though i agree that benjamin button was a great movie, slumdog was much more original film with much more surprising performances and direction. I personally would rather see this little film take home the oscar than to put brad pitt in another spotlight.

I think the Globes were close to perfect and 'audience friendly' films were recognized as opposed to films like Doubt which most of us wouldn't have seen..im absolutely thrilled for Kate Winslet..but i dont think she'll win the Oscar for Best Actress maybe the supporting one*fingers crossed*..i hope Benjamin Button wins something too..it was an excellent film.

I hope Benjamin Button doesn't win Best Picture. The movie was good; however, it is only being considered as an Academy-worthy film because its an epic tale of love, loss & it stars two of Hollywood's most-loved stars: Brad Pitt & Cate Blanchett. I just wasn't that impressed with it. Zodiac, Fight Club, Se7en – these are David Fincher's finest films – NOT Benjamin Button.

To me, no film was better or more arresting than the emotional rollarcoaster that is Revolutionary Road. The perf. by Winslet and DiCaprio are forces to be reckoned with – it was the finest crafted film I've seen this year. My runner-up is, without a doubt, Gran Torino.

I think Mickey Rourke will and should win Best Actor; however, Clint Eastwood is not far behind – his performance was outstanding (continuing to amaze me at 70+).

Although there's that 70.8% Globe-to-Oscar win percentage, I think it's still worth pointing out that the last movie to win Best Picture at the Globes and the Oscars was Return of the King back in 2003.

Kate Winslet has an EXTREMELY good chance of winning Best Actress, especially when you look at Oscar politics.

Firstly, once you win an award in one category, it is a whole lot harder to win that same award again. Thus, Meryl Streep has only won two awards, despite her oodles of nominations: one Best Supporting Actress and one Best Actress. I wonder if she'll ever win again. It's almost obligatory that she be nominated every other year, but I won't be placing huge money on another win.

Secondly, if an actor/actress has been nominated quite a few times for some really great performance, but still hasn't won the Oscar, the Academy will feel like they need to reward that actor/actress. This often means that an actor/actress (or even a director) will win the Oscar for a work that clearly isn't his/her best or most memorable. See Ellen Burstyn's win for "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore," following nominations for "The Last Picture Show" and "The Exorcist" and preceding "Requiem for a Dream." Kate Winslet falls into this category: she has gotten five nominations for five fantastic performances, and she still hasn't won. The Academy feels that it's high time they give her an award, and soon. I think this might be the year. I'm not sure if she'll also get Best Supporting Actress as well, but I'd be willing to wager a little something on her winning Best Actress.

As for Anne Hathaway, she will most likely get nominated. I wouldn't mind if she won over Kate Winslet. While I do so love Kate Winslet extremely much, I am positive she will be able to turn out another award-worthy performance if she doesn't win this go-round. However, I also love Anne Hathaway, and while she's a great actress, she often tends to lean towards the softer comedy roles ("Devil Wears Prada" "Get Smart") that do not promise another Oscar chance in the near future. But I do not think Anne Hathaway will win this one. Keep our fingers crossed that she finds another Oscar-worthy role in the future! (Her two upcoming roles won't be contenders, even if she's great in them.)

Slumdog is really going towards the big "O" win! It is unstoppable. I still believe that the OSCARS will go for Benjamin Button or MILK. I really need to see the SAG Awards. This will really firm up my predix for the OSCAR Awards.

Kate's win last nite opened the race for Best Actress again. But I strongly believe this is Meryl's year to win. Being nominated for 15 times is enough torture for her! it is not an obligation to the critics or the academy but she did a very good job in Doubt.

Best Actor is still is Sean Penn, Supporting Actor is Heath Ledger and Sup. Actress is Kate Winslet (The Reader). I will still place my bet to: ACTRESS: Meryl Streep.

as to the lead actor and lead actress comparison, the percentages 62% and 79.1% respectively would be much lower if we consider the fact that the golden globes separate the categories between drama and comedy/musical with a regular 5 (sometimes 6) nominations under each while the oscars does not.

thus, if 2 of 10 nominees for lead actor and lead actress in the golden globes win, how many of them go on to bag the oscars?

@Quake82: I think Zodiac will play into things though. I feel like the Academy tends to be a little after the fact; they reward the track record not the instance.

I hope Winslet sweeps the Oscars. This is based on nothing else other than the fact that I love her, and I think she is one of the best actresses of this generation. Hands down. And it's time she won one. Or two.

I still want to see Kate take a double win. But there is another woman who take home her first nomination til twenty years ago, she holds the record of most nominations, the academy wants to give her now that important third oscar, because she is in the same place with Ingrid Bergman, Kate Hepburn and Jack Nicholson – shes that kind of star. Maybe Winslet has a better chance for her role as Hanna Schmitz, Penelope and Viola are perfect in their roles but haven´t that body of work like Winslet. And Anne Hathaway should be happy with her deserved nomination.
