'Ghostbusters 3' Continues to Gain Traction
Casting, director and a possible production start date
I haven't covered the possibility of a Ghostbusters 3 because each rumor or little bit of speculation is just that, rumor and speculation, even though all the principals seem to be getting involved (Rick Moranis aside). However, with each new conversation this thing seems to be getting closer and closer to a reality.
The last time I brought up the film was last September when Dan Aykroyd was interviewed by E! At that time it was revealed "The Office" co-exec producers Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky where writing the script for Ghostbusters 3, which is expected to be a jumping off point for a new group to take over busting duties.
The latest news comes from Hero Complex's interview with Aykroyd as he reveals original Ghostbusters helmer Ivan Reitman is "too busy as a mega-producer" to direct the new feature. Aykroyd's second choice, however, is Harold Ramis who would also be starring as Dr. Egon Spengler.
Ramis also just finished directing Year One, which was coincidentally co-written by Eisenberg and Stupnitsky. Of course, that is just a wishlist and nothing solid.
Aykroyd told the site he believes the movie will move forward but that he has also learned that "at any second everything could blow up." The details of story are still in play, but Aykroyd said he's hoping for a five-member "new generation" team with several female members. "I'd like it to be a passing-of-the-torch movie. Let's revisit the old characters briefly and happily and have them there as family but let's pass it on to a new generation."
So who would be part of this "new generation"? Two suggestions by Aykroyd were Alyssa Milano and Eliza Dushku. Milano just lent her voice to the upcoming "Ghostbusters" video game.
Despite Aykroyd saying, "I'm excited about the whole idea of getting this done," I still remain mildly skeptical. For some reason I just can't muster up much excitement for this film, especially with the idea of it being on a passing-of-the-torch feature. Then again, the comedic talent involved is hard to second guess.
