'Gears of War' Finds Home at New Line

Videogame adaptation is unnecessary and will be bad

I can already see a feature film adaptation of the popular XBOX360 videogame "Gears of War" going down the same shitty route Doom did. It's a fun game, but I personally don't think any videogame stories hold up well enough to be turned into movies, Resident Evil sort of worked and I liked it, but looking at movies like Silent Hill and Doom we have to say it's looking grim.

However, this isn't stopping New Line Cinema from picking up the rights to "Gears of War" with Stuart Beattie (Collateral and Derailed) aboard to pen the script. Beattie wrote a 21 page treatment which is what was being chopped around.

"Gears of War" is a first person fighting game about a world reeling from an invasion by aliens known as the Locust. A small group of elite soldiers, including the main character Marcus Fennix, who is rescued from prison at the beginning of the game, fight to retake the planet Sera for its surviving humans.

Perhaps the one benefit "Gears" has over the previous debacle with Microsoft's "Halo" is that it is an ultra-violent game and will certainly garner an R-rating therefore the idea of having to create a movie the kiddies can go see is already something no one has to worry about. We'll see…

I think the benefit that Gears of War has over past failures is that there is more potential for a story. We essentially get a blip of the story, which is somewhat fun. Everyone wants to know the back story for this character and it can be carried out if, big if, the script is good and they get the right director.
