From 'Button' to 'Gatsby' – From Fincher to Baz

Luhrmann taking on Fitzgerald as well...

Nikki Finke at Deadline Hollywood is reporting Baz Luhrmann's follow up to Australia will be The Great Gatsby for 20th Century Fox based on the acclaimed F. Scott Fitzgerald whose loose adaptation of his short story "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" will hit theaters this Christmas directed by David Fincher. Finke reports Luhrmann recently purchased rights to the F. Scott Fitzgerald classic but there is no word as to if he will be adapting it himself although we can assume based on his previous films, that he will.

This is not the first time "The Great Gatsby" has been turned into a film as the 1974 version starring Robert Redford and Mia Farrow release directed by Jack Clayton and adapted by Francis Ford Coppola won two Oscars for costumes and original song score despite not exactly being a favorite to many.

Redford starred as Gatsby, the self-made millionaire who uses his vast (and implicitly ill-gotten) fortune to buy his way into Long Island society. Most of all, Gatsby wants to win back the love of socialite Daisy Buchanan (Mia Farrow), now married to "old money" Tom Buchanan (Bruce Dern). Calmly observing the passing parade is Nick Carraway (Sam Waterston), Gatsby's best friend, who narrates the film.

The story was also adapted in 1949, 1926 as well as on TV in 2000.

There is obviously no word on who will be starring in the film although Finke offers up names such as Leonardo DiCaprio or James Marsden as Gatsby and Amy Adams as Daisy. I have not read the book or seen any of the previously filmed versions, but for those that have… Any suggestions?

I suppose art imitates life and vice versa. Entourage has Scorsese adapting Gatsby for next season.

I hope that if this is true that Luhrmann really puts effort into this. I like Luhrmann's vision, but his writing sometimes tapers off. The Great Gatsby is my all-time favorite book, I would hate if it was destroyed mainstream. To be fair, I haven't seen the Robert Redford version, but I might have to see it.

I saw the 2000 version in school and it was awful (Paul Rudd was in it, for god's sake).

I liked Australia, which is the only Luhrmann movie I've seen (I've been meaning to see Moulin Rouge for some time now though), so I will probably see this. It all depends on reviews and the trailer, so we'll see.

Can't say this is hotly anticipated though.

@Scott: You gotta see Moulin Rouge! I hadn't seen it until earlier this year, but once I did I honestly watched it three times in one week. It's a movie that will be a must own once they release it on Blu-ray.

Personally I really like the book, I never seen the Robert Redford version but I want to. I yet have to see Australia, I'm dying to see it! Moulin Rouge is my favorite movie of all time and I love the way Baz see the things and aspect of life. All his movies have that magical touch that makes them get into your heart. I really hope he makes te right thing with this movie. Leonardio DiCaprio would make an excellent job playing Gatsby! In the case of Daisy, Amy Adams would make a good role but personally I think Rachel Weisz would also make a good part.

The most overrated book in America great. I had to read it three times for School. It was also voted on by the Public as the most overrated book.So it's not just my opinion. I think Amy Adams needs to do something different and get away from roles like these.
