Personally I think an attempt at making "Voltron" or even the recently announced attempts at making a live-action "Thundercats" is a bit silly, but for different reasons. A live-action "Thundercats" is a bit silly and you can't really take it seriously because… well… they are "people" that are also cats. It will just be a movie with a bunch of Beast characters like Kelsey Grammer played in X3.
As for "Voltron", the Variety article talks about how the recent success of Transformers obviously instigated the interest, but this is a bit different since there are also people directly involved in what happens with Voltron, a.k.a. the Defender of the Universe.
In the animated series, five Galaxy Alliance pilots control vehicles shaped like lions that combine and form the massive sword-wielding Voltron robot in order to battle an evil menace.
There are reasons these two cartoons have not been made into movies yet and once they are I can already hear people saying, "Finally the technology is available to make these movies." Yes, with Transformers that was certainly true, but with "Voltron" there are going to be people controlling the lion shaped vehicles. On top of that the villains aren't other lion shaped vehicles, they are pretty much everything imaginable.
The latest draft of the script was penned by John Marks and his take is described as a post-apocalyptic tale of survival set in New York City and Mexico. Good thing, post-apocalyptic stories are rare these days.
I am sorry, I just don't see it working without it being animated and we all saw that TMNT, while not terrible, was hardly great.

Initial reports of Thundercats being a live action movie were wrong, it's going to be a CGI-animated movie. See here for details…

Thundercats. hooooooooooooooooo!!!
Voltron is the best cartoon ever. This movie should have been written by me. I will not accept failure.
"And I'll form… THE HEAD!"
Yeah.
Can't stand to sit through another Transformers. Can you?
I will take another Transformers if they make it like the trailers for the first one and not the actual movie. The trailers promised one thing and then we get that crappy kid flick.
