I saw this movie this weekend and it's pretty good. It's a bit too long and has some rather predictable story lines that don't add much. Regarding the ending? Fox made the RIGHT decision. The story would not hang together if he dies. There is no good reason to kill him off.

My big problem with the movie is that it didn't know what it wanted to be. Did it want to be a grand love story, a story about good triumphing over evil, or a sad commentary on how the Aussi government treated the aborigines? It does a good job on the first, a mediocre job on the second and an interesting job on the third.

I am surprised to hear that they made him change the ending . Cause after seeing the film I do agree, that killing off Hugh Jackman might have been more dramatic . Especially in the sense of love being so hard to keep a hold of,and the stupid things people will do for love. I can totally see where they would have had him die off in the film . It has to stink to have people tell you what is best for your own film. Too bad they couldn't get more consulting on Max Payne the absolute bore of the year.

What surprises me about this is that Baz has been an incredibly successful director for Fox with both "Romeo + Juliet" and "Moulin Rouge!" and in BOTH movies at least one of the main characters dies at the end, so neither of them are happy tales. MR! even garnered a Best Picture nomination. So, I don't understand. Why screw with a director who has brought so much success to you anyways, regardless of the ending? Not to mention, audiences aren't going to know what the ending is before seeing the movie.

Thats bullshit ! Fox has destroyed the theaters enough with its garbage movies why does it have to destroy somebodys' creation... It's a story like any other book on the shelves you can just stop production of the book and force the author to change the ending. They should keep it the way it is and let Baz Luhrmann do his thing.

You know studio's, if they think a happy ending can bring in more money than that's what's gonna happen.
Even in the current economic environment the dollar is still more powerfull than integrity and respect.
