Four More Critic Award Groups: Houston, Toronto, Phoenix and Dallas-Fort Worth

They just keep rolling in, don't they?

Well, last time it was St. Louis, San Diego, San Francisco and Southeastern Critics weighing in and today I have four more critic award lists to preview for you as critics from Houston, Toronto, Phoenix and Dallas-Fort Worth have all released their winners and for the most part it's a Slumdog Millionaire day with it taking two of the four Best Picture slots while Benjamin Button scores one and the folks in Toronto toss up a surprise win for Mongrel's Wendy and Lucy.

Sean Penn (Milk) continues to clean up the Best Actor nods while Toronto was the odd duck again awarding Mickey Rourke for The Wrestler. The Best Actress category saw a pair of wins for Anne Hathaway (Rachel Getting Married) while Michelle Williams (Wendy and Lucy) and Meryl Streep (Doubt) also took home honors.

Heath Ledger (The Dark Knight) was named Best Supporting Actor on all four lists while Viola Davis (Doubt) won for Best Supporting Actress on two lists with Rosemarie Dewitt (Rachel Getting Married) and Marisa Tomei (The Wrestler) split the other two.

Best Director was Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire) all the way except for the Toronto crix who refuse to play nice and award Jonathan Demme (Rachel Getting Married).

Meanwhile, WALL•E has pretty much proven at this point it will be winning Best Animated Feature at the Oscars while Man On Wire owns the Best Documentary category as all four lists once again award those two.

All four lists as featured on the next four pages and you can always keep up on the lists in RopeofSilicon's "The Contenders" section.

I'm glad that some people aren't forgetting about "In Bruges". It was solid in every way. And definitely one of the big overlooked movies of the year. I hope at least the screenplay gets nominated, but I'd also like to see Ralph Fiennes nab a supporting actor nod. His work in just a few scenes stood out to me the whole year.

Oh, Come ON!!! The Dark Knight is not the Second Coming and definately doesn't deserve all those awards. As far as Comic Book movies go, Iron Man was 10 times better!! It dissapoints me that people insist on giving TDK all these awards. SERIOUSLY. There are tons of movies that deserve those awards so much more than TDK.

Does Phoenix actually have a category called overlooked?
Do they want to say, "hey we named others the best but don't forget to watch this one"?

In Bruges certainly is great but for me it's the ending that keeps it away from competing for the top spot but the rest of it was absolutely fantastic.
I expect (and received) good perfomance from Gleeson and Fiennes but Farrell really surprised and impressed me.

It's great how Ledger is getting honoured so much and in my opinion actually for is performance and not because he passed away so recently.
Such talent.

I can't wait until the Seattle group announces! What's that? We're not represented?

Oh. Then never mind.

IRON MAN!?!? Oh come on!!! Now you're getting ridiculous.
Iron Man was teriffic, but If Iron Man is better than the Dark Knight, George W. Bush will be President for 4 more years…I promise you that!!
Let's not get crazy now!
Just wait and see what happens on January 22 when the nominations are announced.
And, if it disappoints you, it looks like The Dark Knight will be nominated for Best PIcture, with the buzz going around it.
Stop making this a Marvel vs. DC thing please!

Laremy: That's sad….even Kansas City, last place I lived while in the States, has an official Kansas City Film Critics Circle which hands out awards for films, etc. Most of them wouldn't know a good film from the over-cooked surface of a pudding, but they _do_ have their own awards program!

@Omar: It's not a "Marvel vs. DC thing". It's a good movie vs. not so good movie thing. It might just be a matter of taste. But you have to at least admit that TDK was NOT as good as everyone thought it was!!

The Phoenix Film Critics are obviously nuts. The fact that they would have a category for Best Live Action Family Film seems odd, and the fact that they gave to one of this year's WORST movies is even more disturbing.
