@<a href="#comment-9970" rel="nofollow">Wilfred Beah</a>:

That's just what I'd been thinking. The hairs on the tree stand up just like the hairs on the back of Izzi's neck, which I think is the last shot of the film. There's definitely a connection there. I'm thinking the tree is what grew from the seed Tom plants at Izzi's grave; in a way the tree is Izzi's rebirth - Then not until reaching Xibalba, either literally or metaphorically, does Tom realize that neither he or the tree can live forever - he must accept death to continue the cycle of life.

Terrific article. It's true, the magic of this film is that there are so many thought-provoking interpretations. The Fountain is definitely one of the greats.

In fact, I've just created a petition asking Criterion to create a DVD release of The Fountain with Darren Aronofsky, with the full proper set of extras and quality transfer that Criterion does so well! (And possibly including the alternate cut that Aronofsky has mentioned he's been working on). This would be the quality DVD release The Fountain deserves!

Everyone seems to forget that present day tom found the tree of life. And that quite possibly the seed he plants in his wife's grave may be a seed from the tree. Giving rise to the relationship the hairs on the tree from the future stand up.
