Forget Duvall's Lead Oscar Chances… For Now

'Get Low' moves to 2010

Kris Tapley at In Contention brings news that Sony Classics will be holding on to the recently acquired festival favorite Get Low until mid-2010 with no plans for a late 2009 Oscar run in an attempt to score a Best Actor nomination for Robert Duvall, which was instantly assumed once the film was picked up earlier this week.

This, of course, means I have had to once again revise my predictions as earlier this week I added Duvall to my list of Best Actor contenders.

While the move comes as a bit of a surprise considering the overwhelming chatter for Duvall, as Tapley points out it isn't a major surprise considering the full slate of films Sony Classics is shepherding into the final months of 2009 including Coco Before Chanel, An Education, Broken Embraces, The White Ribbon and A Prophet.

Maybe Shutter Island could be moved back to 2009 now.

If so maybe possible nominees are going to 2010, does that mean it's a weaker field this year?

This is disappointing for me to hear as I was really looking forward to this film. Unlike Shutter Island, which hasn't reviewed by any critics, this film has received very positive buzz since its premiere at TIFF and it seemed like a certainty that the performances would be Oscar contenders.

Actually, Rolling Stone critic Peter Travers reviewed Shutter Island. He said it was great, and is mad it was pushed to next year.

It wasn't an official review, actually. He said that it would have been a major Oscar contender, and was really MAD. But here's the video to his complaint if you want to see it.

@m1: That's pretty great. Definitely not official like you said, but he obviously seemed very passionate about it. I really enjoyed the trailer for this film so I was disappointed when it got pushed back.
