First Review in for King’s ‘1408′ Adaptation

AintItCool got the first review in, and it ain't no plant!

A few days ago I watched the trailer to the upcoming Stephen King-based horror flick, 1408. The film’s pedigree is solid with a cast that includes John Cusack, Samuel L. Jackson, Mary McCormack and Tony Shalhoub. The director is Mikael Håfström who I assume made some pretty great Swedish films before he made Derailed.

Anyway, I was pretty darn impressed with the trailer. It looks legitimately scary and horror movies in general don’t seem to succeed in doing that lately.

Now enter “PlantEater” who sent a very promising review to the good people over at AintItCoolNews. Moriarty vouched for the guy so, despite his alias, he’s no “plant”. He just eats them, apparantly. Here’s a spoiler-free tidbit:

… does anyone remember the hedge animals, the fire hose, and the playground tunnel in his novel “The Shining”? Well, this film’s two hours is packed with that kind of heart-in-your-mouth terror…And what a ride the movie gave us! The scares kept coming and coming, and I was surprised, and delighted to find myself jumping out of my skin repeatedly … the movie did NOT telegraph its scares so they could be anticipated, and moved too quickly for this viewer, at least, to detach from the experience. At one point an “oh!” was forced out of me, in a high girly voice, in response to a particularly intense sequence ending in a violent scare.

Consider me sold. 1408 is slated for a July 13th release and based on the trailer and this review, it looks to be a solid summer hit. You can read the entire review here.
