First Looks at Charlize Theron in Arriaga's 'The Burning Plain'

Looks like Arriaga will never cheer up

Charlize Theron in The Burning Plain

For anyone familiar with screenwriter Guillermo Arriaga you already know his films are quite depressing, that is unless you found something to smile about in Amores perros, 21 Grams or Babel. Well, he is now taking his depression and instead of handing it off to director Alejandro González Iñárritu after their fallout, he is now directing himself. It's not the first time he has helmed one of his own scripts, but it is certainly the first time he has done so with a cast including the likes of Charlize Theron and Kim Basinger.

Set to premiere in competition at the 65th Venice Film Festival, we have your first look at the Burning Plan, a story weaving together two storylines taking place in the past and present. Basinger plays Gina, the mother of Charlize Theron's character as seen in childhood. Theron will play Sylvia, who tries to find common ground with her parents after a turbulent childhood. The two narratives eventually converge.
