First Look at Gerard Butler in Lionsgate's 'Citizen Game'

A Lionsgate April Fools? 'Citizen Game'? Really?

Lionsgate has released the first photo from the film that used to be called Game starring Gerard Butler, but is apparently now titled Citizen Game.

The picture is directed by Crank duo Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor and stars Gerard Butler as Kabel in a futuristic film in which Kabel participates in Slayers, an ultra-violent multi-player online game in which millions worldwide tune in online to watch him and hundreds of other convicts battle.

As for the new title, I have no idea if this is supposed to be some sort of play off Citizen Kane or if it is to imply the citizens fuel this violent game or what, but it just seems silly.

However you look at it, Citizen Game is set to hit theaters on September 4 and you can get a larger look at the above still right here.

No matter what its name, somebody will complain it should be something else. I was happy with "Game" but. . . whatever.

Several have seen it as a reference to "Citizen Kane, which revolutionized how films were technically filmed, in its day. Since they're quite proud of their new camera technology, I wonder if they feel this film will be as revolutionary and inspiring?

Anyway, I want to see it no matter what they call it. Good luck to them!

Oh what a shock: a derivative premise (from "Running Man" "Rollerball" & others) and and now a derivative title ("Citizen Kane"). How Hollywood of Neveldine & Taylor. They're all they're cracked down to be.

'Citizen Game' – LAME! Why can't they leave well enuff alone? Brevity always trumps cutesy referential tweakings by the Hollyweird establishment. 'Game' sounds much more provocative and carries the punch inherent in big-budget action flicks. Get a clue!

My thinking is that the name was changed because the original name "Game" was already used. Personally, I don't care what the name of the film is because Gerard Butler is in the lead.

According to IMDB there is no comparable movie that has utilized the name "Game". Especially in the action genre. the use of single word names just plain WORKS … have no idea what they were thinking. "Citizen Game" seems completely bizarre … especially given the militaristic look of the film (which is gritty and great). Someone needs to rethink this name change!
