Female Scarface Coming to the 'South'

Set in Spain?

Variety is reporting that Jonathan Jakubowicz (huh?) is set to direct Queen of the South for Warner Independent, an adaptation of a female Scarface tale set in Spain.

The story is based on Arturo Perez-Reverte's bestselling novel and revolves around a Mexican woman who escapes to Spain after her drug mule boyfriend is killed, then becomes a drug kingpin and seeks revenge for her boyfriend's murderers. Albert Torres did a rewrite of Hanna Weg's script.

Pic is looking for a leading lady and Eva Mendes, Penelope Cruz and Jennifer Lopez are all taking a look. Gotta say, I don't think a known name is the way to go here and all those ladies are way too pretty. Give me a rugged looking broad and give her a machine gun and I am game. It isn't as if Al Pacino was Don Juan in Scarface.

Producer Sergio Aguero said the pic will depict not only "the Sicily of Mexico" but also the Vegas of the Spanish Riviera.
