DVD Review: The Sword in the Stone (45th Anniversary Edition)
Bare bones and busted, but worth it if you don't have it already
I guess it just isn't time The Sword in the Stone got its own Platinum Edition release, as it joins Disney's Robin Hood as the two classic Disney animated films that deserve a complete remastering and are left to dangle in the wind. Considering this is the 45th Anniversary Edition I expect it may be another five years before Disney does anything truly special for this movie, because this DVD just isn't it.
Much like the Robin Hood release two years ago, The Sword in the Stone has not been remastered, the video still looks just as scratchy as the two shorts included in the special features. The color needs some serious correction and seeing this release makes the idea of a remastered version that much more appealing, but the lack of attention paid to this DVD release doesn't diminish the film's overall quality.
The Sword in the Stone is definitely in my top five favorite animated Disney features. Robin Hood, Aladdin, The Lion King and probably The Jungle Book make up the other four. Not too sure about the order though. The film takes an unusual twist of the story of King Arthur and his famed sword Excalibur and turns it into a light story told over a short 80 minute film. It's funny and extremely entertaining and shows that it doesn't take endless pop culture references to make an animated movie funny, something Kung Fu Panda certainly learned. [ ... ]
