DVD Review of 'Batman Gotham Knight'

Don't waste your time or money on this

Warner Premiere

Anticipation for The Dark Knight is on serious overload. Everyone is pumped and ready for Batman's return to the big screen and Warner Premiere is trying to satiate that anticipation with something similar to what was done with The Animatrix with Batman Gotham Knight, a series of six animated stories that begin where the one before it ends. The details boast "acclaimed directors", writers such as David Goyer (Batman Begins, Blade) and Josh Olson (A History of Violence) as well as a PG-13 rating as if that is really saying anything.

Before I go much further, I should say I have never seen Batman The Animated Series, and when it comes to animation I am more of a Disney/Pixar/DreamWorks kind of a person – you know, mainstream. I will say that Hayao Miyazaki is a lot of fun to watch and I even enjoyed Appleseed Ex Machina, but for the most part I just can't get into the more "real life" kind of stuff. I may talk a big game but Pandas with kung fu abilities and mini robot garbage cleaners are more my speed. However, that doesn't mean Batman Gotham Knight is any good, it just means I am not exactly the target audience, no matter how much I loved The Dark Knight.

In the span of 76 minutes, the story of Batman Gotham Knight features Batman up against familiar foes to those that watch the movies such as Scarecrow as well as those that will delight fans such as Killer Croc and Deadshot. Personally, the Deadshot story was my favorite, but that isn't saying much considering it was only about 12 minutes of the entire feature.

For as much as Warner is pushing this bad boy I expected quite a bit more, but just like The Animatrix it falls flat. Actually, The Animatrix was much better on just about every level.

The DVD comes with a sneak peek at a new animated version of Wonder Woman in which Keri Russell voices the Amazon warrior and it also includes the likes of Nathan Fillion, Virginia Madsen and Alfred Molina in the voice cast. You also get a commentary track on the film from DC Comics Senior Vice President/Creative Affairs Gregory Noveck, former Batman Editor Dennis O'Neil and the voice of Batman in the feature Kevin Conroy. If you are wondering if what they had to say was interesting, wonder no longer, it wasn't.

Overall, this thing is a major pass. I wouldn't waste another minute of my time watching it and I am not going to waste any more of yours writing about it. Just wait until July 18th and check out The Dark Knight, now that is worth the price of admission.
