@Quake82: I think that's the direction they're going. It's not a bad idea. It's just that I don't think many people are all that interested in revisiting the characters. But that's not saying there couldn't be a good movie made from the idea

I think a prequel would be a really good idea. Think about it. The prequel could begin immediately after Neville's wife and daughter are killed in the helicopter crash. It could focus on the military's struggle to maintain order with an increasingly infected New York population. Can you imagine the madness, the chaos, the potential for epic filmmaking. People die, Neville struggles with colleagues to discover a cure, only to see the antidotes fail again and again and him watching as his friends slowly sucumb to the virus and become infected.

The film ends with Robert transmitting his message and sitting at his desk.....waiting.

Thoughts and opinions, please.

@JB: I agree, the film had great potential--even in its major deviations from the book. I really wish they would have completely kept Will Smith alone and not included the female and kid. She is incredibly important to the book, but based on the overall changes they made to the story she's beyond pointless in the film.

The book is much better. The title "I am Legend" has much, much more meaning based on how it ends. Importantly, the female character's significance to the story and who she is would have made this more akin to a horror film than a CGI/action extravaganza. I liked the movie. Will Smith is always watchable, but the book has impact (the movie could have too).
