Downey Jr. Investigates Ritchie’s ‘Sherlock Holmes’

Fanboys have a new film to slobber

Robert Downey Jr.

Now that Robert Downey Jr. is officially “fanboy cool” after starring in Iron Man and introducing them to yet another real actor you can almost hear them rejoicing as Variety breaks the news that Downey will star as Sherlock Holmes in Guy Ritchie’s follow-up to RocknRolla opening later this year.

Sherlock Holmes will be written and directed by Ritchie and will be Downey’s first signing since Iron Man’s release and will begin shooting in October. The original draft was penned by Anthony Peckham before Ritchie gave it a polish. The story will surely be adapted from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s original tale, but it is also said that the “Sherlock Holmes” comicbook played a part in the creation of the new story.

The best thing about Downey being signed and the production getting an October start is that it is now sure to be completed prior to the Columbia Pictures Sherlock story starring Sacha Baron Cohen and Will Ferrell, which was penned by Tropic Thunder scripter Etan Cohen.

For those eager fo more Downey you will get two more chances this year as he goes blackface in the wartime comedy Tropic Thunder and then in the Oscar bait feature The Soloist with Jamie Foxx. He is also expected to reprise the role of Tony Stark in Iron Man 2 with Jon Favreau directing with a tentative release of April 30, 2010. I expect Sherlock Holmes to hit theaters sometime mid-late 2009.
