Dorks Draped in Horrific Pelts

Anchor Bay unloads some horror and comedy

Many of you have probably noticed the new sponsored section on the homepage and on the Home Video homepage featuring the latest titles from Anchor Bay and as a result the home entertainment studio has been sending me the titles they are advertising. Last night I had the chance to watch two of the three titles, Pelts and Night of the Living Dorks, the other being Devil’s Den.

Between Pelts and Night of the Living Dorks I couldn’t have chosen two films that differed from each other any more. The first being a corny little Masters of Horror title from director Dario Argento, father of the lovely actress Asia Argento. Night of the Living Dorks is actually the title to pay attention to here, it runs 92 minutes and is great from start to finish. It really is much more of a comedy than a horror, but it is just tame enough and not over the top that it works. It works really well in fact.

Let me first tell you about Pelts really quick since it isn’t exactly my cup of tea but it is sure to be a title some of you will find interest in. It stars Meat Loaf as a furrier and he has just gotten his hands on 12 of the finest raccoon pelts he has ever seen. Playing Jake Feldman, his character is in love with Shana, a local stripper played by the sexy as hell Ellen Ewusie. A quick search shows that she hasn’t really done much of anything, but she certainly is hot and more than willing to show off her body. Anyway, Jake is trying to find a way to do the dirty dirty with Shana and figure a chance to wear his new fur coat in a fashion show will get her. Problem? Well, the problem is that the pelts are cursed and whoever comes in contact with them must mutilate themselves in the most horrific ways. Suffice to say, this isn’t a genre bending feature. It runs for just shy of an hour and will entertain gore lovers but no one else.

Okay, that is out of the way, now for the good title in the bunch, Night of the Living Dorks, or Die Nacht der lebenden Loser if you want to use its German title. Yeah, this one was originally filmed in German and is dubbed over in English and it is fantastic!

The film features Philip and his best friends Konrad and Weener. These three are the largest geeks at Frederich Nietzsche High. Philip has a crush on the school “hottie” Uschi (she ain’t that hot) and wants to ask her to the school dance. However, every time he does he gets his ass kicked. Weener wants to hook up with one of his teachers and Konrad is the most dysfunctional of the group as he keeps his diary of everyone that picked on him throughout his life. In his desire to hook-up with Uschi, Philip employs a group of goth kids, one of which is hot, hot, hot played by Collien Fernandes (see her here and save to hard drive), and he and his three friends take part in a amateur ceremony that ends much different than originally planned.

On the way home the three crash into a tree and die only to be reborn as zombies in the local morgue. Konrad goes flesh crazy, Weener takes advantage of his new strength and drinking skills and Philip tries to hit on Uschi, find an anecdote and stay out of trouble. As Konrad is eating his teachers time runs short and hilarity ensues, trust me, it is corny but very entertaining.

As for the third title, Devil’s Den, I didn’t get a chance to watch it, but it is about Quinn Taylor and his friend Nick who are on their way back from Mexico with a load of Spanish Fly to sell in the States. They stop at a gentlemen's club called The Devil's Den and decide to test out their product on the unsuspecting women there. Only, these women aren't really human, and the two men find themselves in a very fatal position. Also tossed in are a female-assassin on the hunt for Quinn, a monster hunter who just happened to stumble into everything, a Japanese swordsman who doesn't really exist and even Satan himself who have to deal with the situation once all hell breaks loose. The film stars Devon Sawa (Final Destination) and Kelly Hu (The Scorpion King and X2), but that is all for recognizeable names. Based on the description it seems like it fits right in between the other two titles with Pelts being the major gore/horror flick, Dorks being the horror/comedy and Devil’s Den being the horror/thriller of the bunch.

If you are interested in any of the mentioned titles click on any of the links below to check ‘em out at Amazon.com and enjoy the nice little pic of Collien to see you on your way.
