Domestic Trailer for Steve McQueen's 'Hunger' Arrives

I may finally get to see this soon

The official trailer for Steve McQueen's Hunger debuted at the New York Times and I am still chomping at the bit to see this film that made such a splash on the festival circuit last year and even made it into several top tens at the end of the year. It did see a mini-release last year in December and will see yet another one on March 20 in New York and expand to major markets on the 27th, which is when I hope to finally catch it.

The performance of Michael Fassbender has been talked about by plenty of folks as the film follows life in the Maze Prison, Northern Ireland, with an interpretation of the highly emotive events surrounding the 1981 IRA Hunger Strike led by Bobby Sands (Fassbender). With an epic eye for detail, the film provides a timely exploration of what happens when body and mind are pushed to the uttermost limit.

Check out the trailer below and I have six stills from the film right here.

I've been following this movie as it was released across Great Britian. As you can imagine, it was a difficult subject matter for the audience. But even so, the praise was very high. There's a new Steve McQueen in town.

It is one of the most powerful films of 2008. Steve McQueen removies every bit of protest/political issue and instead focusses squarely on the very act of using the body as a weapon for sacrifice. And that raises great many questions, way beyond only IRA.

This is a great film, and McQueen is a talent we should be keeping more than an eye on.

I thought the film did a great job keeping the story within Bobby's character and not turning it into something political… McQueen offers his view on the film's apolitical nature in this podcast interview. He's an interesting character:
