Does James Cameron’s Early Opinion of ‘Terminator 4′ Matter?

I can't see why it would...

James Cameron

Early on, before Terminator Salvation began filming McG alluded to the fact that James Cameron, director of The Terminator and Terminator 2, had given the film his blessing and approved of it. It was reported McG cast star Sam Worthington in the film based on Cameron’s recommendation after working with Worthington on Avatar. However, anything having to do with Cameron was thrown out the window when fanboys received word from an interview in the National Post in which Cameron said:

“It could be a big steaming pile or it could be brilliant. Sam Worthington is in the Avatar and the new Terminator and he likes the script, but I never saw it. There was no blessing involved.”

With that quote out there I was surprised to see more fanboys grasp on to an Ain’t It Cool News interview with Cameron when he reiterated the point that he hadn’t “seen a foot of film” outside of the trailer and based on that he has “zero basis for supporting or dissing the film”. Sounds reasonable.

He continued saying, “In fact, it might be very good, an opinion based solely on what Sam Worthington has shared with me. He’s nobody’s fool when it comes to material, and has absolutely the lowest bullshit quotient of anyone I know, and he has repeatedly told me that he reckons the film is going to be good.”

Personally I read all of this and say, “Who cares?” But I am smarter than that, because I know a legion of sci-fi/Terminator fans out there care and even though I am not one of them I can respect that. However, I wonder if anyone is interested in Cameron’s non-opinion, or even his speculation based on a conversation with Sam Worthington? If you are interested you can go right here and read all of AICN’s report. If not, join the club, nice to meetcha.

So he rightfully has no opinion because he knows nothing about it yet but says it might end up ok because he likes Sam?
[sarc_mode]What news indeed![/sarc_mode]

And I am a sci-fi/Terminator fan.

Well, I think Cameron is being fair in not having an opinion because he honestly has no clue of what the new movie will be about. The fact that he exudes confidence in Worthington’s interpetation of the material only shows that the director trusts his actor’s opinion. Personally, I didn’t like T3 that much and I haven’t seen the show, but the teaser trailers with Christan “Batman” Bale as John Connor are generating excitement. Looks like “Wolverine” will have a major competitor come next May. Can’t wait.

This has potential to be the best of them all. I know it sounds ridiculous but hear me out. The maturation of John Connor as a leader can now be examined. For a writer this is an opportunity to invent a legend in John Connor. Because the charector hasn’t grown into a leader yet. In this movie if he rises up through the ranks and earns the leader spot. That may officially make this one credible because it takes the audience on a journey with the charector to legitimacy.
