Do You Ever Lie about the Movies You've Seen?

Have you actually seen 'The Godfather'?

Have you seen The Godfather? How about 12 Angry Men? Casablanca? Or even Citizen Kane? I ask this after reading Xan Brooks' piece over at The Guardian headlined "Have you actually seen The Godfather?"

Brooks' article cites a survey conducted by Orange which resulted in learning that one in five of us have lied about seeing The Godfather. Men, the survey suggests, are more likely to bluff about movies than women, with 58% admitting they had lied in the past compared with 38% of women.

A spokesman for Orange was quoted saying, "Most people tell the odd white lie so they can seem more knowledgeable to their friends. Others lie because they are embarrassed about appearing less cultured."

I will admit that when I first started RopeofSilicon I had not seen several of the films considered to be classics. I was embarrassed by this fact, but I never actually lied about it as much as I would just quiet down when the conversation began swimming in waters too deep for me. In terms of The Godfather I am a male interested in such things and had seen that one plenty of times already so I never had to lie about that one or GoodFellas, Scarface, Fight Club and the like.

One of the things I have done, in an attempt to alleviate any embarrassment my readers specifically may feel about having not seen particular films was to begin my What I Watched weekly column showcasing the films I watched over the week, most of which I had never seen before. There is no shame in not having seen a movie, all that means is you have better things to do than sit at home on your ass all day staring at a television. My excuse hearkens back to when I was younger, back when I played every sport imaginable and have worked since a very early age. The movies I watched typically had special effects or loads of killing going on. I caught a few of the artsy films around Oscar time, but for the most part it was blockbusters for me. No harm. No foul.

So, now's the time to come clean. Have you ever lied about having seen a movie just to avoid embarrassment? If so what movie did you lie about?

Another question would be to ask what movies haven't you seen that "everyone" says is a must see?

The films that topped Orange's list of films most people lied about seeing are all three Godfather features, Dirty Dancing and The Shawshank Redemption. Other films included Taxi Driver, Gone With the Wind and It's a Wonderful Life. Do any of those titles provide a starting point? Also, if you want to add a little more to the conversation include your age with your comment, but that is certainly not a requirement.

I've been the first poster on these articles as of late (hooray for Twitter updates! And also working late on papers for college classes!), I just found.

Yeah, I've lied before, but not for a long time (at least for around 5 years or so, back before I really got into movies). I claimed I saw stuff like "The Matrix" or "Fight Club" or "Gladiator" when in reality I hadn't.

Now, I just admit the truth, that I haven't seen "classics" like "The Godfather" or "Shawshank Redemption". People might get all uppity about it (WHAT? YOU'VE NEVER SEEN IT???!!) but I really don't care. If I'm interested in a movie, I'll watch it sometime. If not, it won't happen ever. Sorry to say, I'll probably never watch "Laurence of Arabia" or "Dr. Strangelove" or "Braveheart" because I don't care. As I tell people "I like watching movies, but I LOVE watching bad movies". Which is why I bought midnight tickets for "New Moon".

I did lie about seeing Se7en, Fight Club and The Usual Suspects. However in the case of Fight Club I went out and bought it the day after claiming I've seen it, and actually saw it then. Still haven't seen the other two, and you know what's the worst part? I know the goddamn twists in both. Still greatly interested, of course, since I don't know absolutely everything else.

I have lied twice…once in Journalism class one professor asked the class if we have seen Kieslowsli's Decalogue and though i have it in my collection..i havent seen it yet..but still just to show my love for movies…he he he…

and another time it was in an Drama & Acting workshop…about Educating Rita..

well its easy to lie and get away with it..if u watch a lot of movies…if it amounts to around 200+ movie(in your DVD or PC) for a simple man per year +20-25 movies in theatre…you are surely a movie maniac and knew hell of a lot than those people asking u "have u seen it"..and believe me its not a crime to lie coz u love movies..and u just wanna show that u know about them and u love them so its ok..dont you think so??? he he he..

Why lie? It´s more like we´d be ashamed having spent time wathing bad films.
The Godfather and The Godfather Part II are the two greatest films ever made.
Conceived as a quickie by the studio, made by an unknown, starring newcomers and a has-been, they got a blockbuster and a classic.

I never lie about having seen a film I haven't – I've seen more than enough films to be at a stage where anyone who gives me shit for not seeing XXX will be repaid in kind as I scold them for not having seen AAA, BBB, CCC, and DDD. Now… books… those I lie about. A lot.

Why lie? I never did. I see no reason for doing that. And I don't embarrassed at all when I say that I fell asleep while watching "Citizen Kane" and "Jules et Jim" – and I never managed to watch these two again. I know someday I will.

I only saw one Fellini movie in my life ("Amarcord"). Only one Bergman ("Wild Strawberries"). I've never seen "GoodFellas", even though I have a Scorsese box. Sometimes it's a case of "I still didn't have the chance to see it". Sometimes I'm just not interested. Sorry, but Godard does nothing for me.

I still want to see most of the classics. In the past few years, I've seen loads of them – and loved most of them, like the "Godfather" trilogy – I love even the third one! But one has to be in the mood to watch a movie like this. Sometimes I just want to relax and watch "Bring it On" or "Clueless" for the 10th time. And I have no shame about it, either.

@Abhishek: please watch "The Decalogue". It's one of the best things ever done in movie history.

While I've never lied to anyone about having not seen a movie, or in some cases that I have seen it, I lie all the time when I tell them, "Oh, well I'll definitely watch that now".

I usually never have to lie about seeing a film because I have seen most of them. I will admit that i have never seen any of the Godfather films, mainly because each of them are pretty lengthy films. I am no naive enough to think I have seen every movie, because probably no one has, but I usually dont consider myself less of a man, or a movie fanatic because I havent seen a film. It just gives me a reason to watch that particular film.

Why the hell would anyone lie about that?! Jesus, grow up, whoever does that…

I mean, what's wrong with not seeing a movie? Most people in the entire UNIVERSE never saw Citizen Kane, so why be embarassed about it? It's that typical movie 'I know about it, but it's old, so I don't care'.

People should be more embarassed about seeing Transformers than for not seeing Kane. =P

Also, I have no problem in admiting that I found Godfather II uber-boring, that I fell asleep in Casablanca and that I have NO IDEA what happened in any of Fellini's movies that I saw (8¹/², Amacord). So? Probably saying you don't like one of these beloved classics should be a crime, compared to simply not seeing them, right?

I agree with most people who have posted here that there really is no point in lying about what films you have or haven't watched.

What surprises me a bit though is that some posters seem to actually take offense in the idea that someone might actually lie about not having seen a film. Lying is really just a basic human function and i do think there are worse things a person could lie about than films, so i'm not at all surprised that someone would. I have actually sort of lied myself in the sense that when "A Clockwork Orange" was discussed among friends i never admitted to not having seen it.

But yes, not having watched a film is nothing to be ashamed of and like the author said it just shows that you have better things to do. Some people just take films more seriously than others and if you've seen Citizen Kane it doesn't make you any better than anyone else and the same goes if you havn't seen it.

The only movie I lied about seeing was "Funny Girl", because I hated it and turned it off in the middle. I lied about seeing it so people would get off my back, and not make me re-watch it. Other than that I have not lied about seeing a movie. I have however, never seen Gone With the Wind. I have planned on it many times, but now I see no point in watching before the blu-ray comes out this November.

I have absolutely lied about seeing some films, and in fact, I lied about seeing a Spike Lee joint I've never even heard of the other day in class. But it's usually that, I'll fabricate seeing smaller films, but bigger ones I won't venture into.
Talking about the classics, I will always admit to not seeing them and this usually works to pressure myself into seeing them. I had never seen The Godfather until about 6 months ago (and was largely unimpressed) but I would always man up to it. I have yet to see the sequel.

I normally own up to the films I have and haven't seen, but I have lied about one: "Lethal Weapon." Haven't seen it. "The Godfather," "GoodFellas," and "Fight Club" are ones that I've seen in the last two years, and "12 Angry Men" is my all-time favorite.

As for stuff I haven't seen, well, most infamously, "Gone with the Wind" and "Ghost Busters." Those are the two that people get mad at me for. But I WILL see them, I just haven't yet.

Come to think of it, I envy people who still have to see some of the better ones. There is no way to describe the feeling when you experience something special, meant in a positive way. I have seen some famous movies and hated them (1-Transformers, 2-Top Gun, shall I go on?), there are great ones that need time to getting used to (Most of Sergio Leone´s masterpieces, Taxi Driver, Atlantic City, Pulp Fiction, and about 200 more), and there are famous ones I surprisingly liked (The Terminator series at the top of the heap). It´s more fun to browse the old titles than the newest ones, most of which are crap. 90% of USA movies made today are sanctioned by a committee. We can commit suicide or turn to books, really. One question: has anyone seen ALL ABOUT EVE lately? Made in 1950 by a master. Could be happening today.

@MovieLover: Does your mother know that in britain it was giving a 15 rating ? And am not gonna lie here av never seen schindler's list but am getting around to it.

I used to lie about seeing A Clockwork Orange ad been doing it for about 6 – 7 months until i actually bought it on dvd. I vowed I'd never lie about watching a film I'd never seen again, too much respect for a film such a clockwork orange to lie about seeing it.

I had to lie about Dr Strangelove a while before I saw it. It always comes up in Kubrick conversations and I dunno I didn't want to admit I didn't see that one. I'm not sure why. Great movie though.

I have never lied about seeing a movie I hadn't seen. Since I've watched more of the arthouse films than the rest of the my friends anyway, I sort of get a free pass on any of the classics I've missed.

As for classics I haven't seen that everyone else has? Well, it's hard to say what classifies as something "everyone else" has seen. Things like "The Godfather" and "The Shawshank Redemption" are obvious choices, but I have seen just about all the obvious choices. It's the a bit more gray-area choices I haven't seen: like the original "Dawn of the Dead" and "Scream" and "Nightmare on Elm Street" and "Do the Right Thing" and "Ghost." There's loads of the 40's and 50's films I haven't seen: "The Third Man," "Some Like It Hot," etc., but those aren't on my list, and if it isn't on my list I don't care what people think if they learn I haven't seen it.

im 20 years old and there are a lot of "classics" that i still havent seen. i dont think ive really ever lied about seeing a movie though. i have never seen any of the godfathers yet. i have seen most of the other movies mentioned though like shawshank redemption, taxi driver, goodfellas, its a wonderful life, and citizen kane.

i just dont really see the point of lying about seeing a movie. yeah my friends will make fun of me a little for not seeing a movie, but if i lie and say i saw it and they want to talk about it i would have absolutely nothing to talk about. i still have a long way to go in seeing the movie "classics" but i think im off to a decent start at 20 years old

I have not lied. What's the point? What if the person you're lying to asks follow up questions? You're screwed.

As for the "must see" movies that I've never seen: Probably most of them. Godfather, Casablanca, Citizen Kane, Taxi Driver, Shawshank, Gone With the Wind, and I'm sure much more.

@Eric: Agree 100%, I tried that with "Modern Times" when I was about 14, failed miserably when they asked about the factory scene. At that point I figure might as well be honest about my film-going experience. I mean most of us are only in our 20s (I'm 18) so its not like we had the time to watch all the classics.

Yea, I've lied about seeing movies before. Did I have a good reason? Probably not. Why does anyone tell little white lies? Sometimes, it's just easier to save face and say you've seen it, rather than listen to 20 reasons from 20 people as to why you need to see that film.

Here's another question. Who has lied about not seeing a movie, when they really have? Who has guilty pleasures that they don't like to admit? Mine is 10 Things I Hate About You. Love that stuff…

no, i havent lied about the movies ive seen or havent seen. there are limited movies shown here in the philippines & most of the art house or indies are really hard to reach. you can only get them if you buy pirated DVDs & pirated bluray discs here. & that is where i find my movie knowledge.

what's frustrating, is that studio marketing doesnt think that a 3rd world country like ours can 'get' the movies if they would deliver it here. & they only bring us crappy big budget movies. though sometimes, we get to see SOME great movies, but overall, we always get crap
