Director's Guild Announces their 2008 Director Nominees

The usual suspects look to be our frontrunners barring any surprises

The Director's Guild of America (DGA) isn't shy of letting folks know that only six times since the DGA Awards began in 1948 has the Feature Film winner not gone on to win the corresponding Academy Award. So to assume we don't have our Director and Best Picture films locked and loaded is a little bit silly at this point as the five nominees named by the DGA correspond to my most recent Best Picture predictions and I am off by one name (Ron Howard) with my Best Director predictions – that is, based on these nominees, which are as follows:

  • Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire)
  • Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight)
  • Gus Van Sant (Milk)
  • David Fincher (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button)
  • Ron Howard (Frost/Nixon)

I thought for a long time Jonathan Demme (Rachel Getting Married) or Sam Mendes (Revolutionary Road) may get a bump in the Oscar push from the DGA's, but it looks like our top five films for 2008 are pretty much prepped and ready to go.

The winner will be named at the 61st Annual DGA Awards Dinner on Saturday, January 31 2009, at the Hyatt Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles.

I still think that although those are likely best picture nominees, Stephen Daldry will easily muscle out Ron Howard for the fifth best director slot

@Tracy Jordan: As much as I love Stephen Daldry, I think it would be borderline naive to suggest that Ron Howard would be omitted from the Best Director line-up this year, especially after Frost/Nixon and Ron Howard were lucky enough to be nominated for just about everything . No snub from the BFCA, Golden Globes, SAGS, PGA, or DGA. No snubs at all! If anyone gets looked over at the last minute, it will unfortunately be either Gus Van Sant or Christopher Nolan.

Although, I wouldn't shake my head if Daldry, Allen, Aronofsky or Mendes nabbed a nomination. They all deserve a spot as well.

Oh, and if anyone tries to bring up Dreamgirls, I'll throw my sandwich at them.

Comparing Frost/Nixon to Dreamgirls is like comparing a dragon to a fly.
