But it looks like you still have to wait for that Ultimate version of Watchmen

UPDATED: Warner Home Video has officially announced Watchmen for DVD and Blu-ray for July 21 as well as the release of 300 (The Complete Experience) on Blu-ray on the same day. The Watchmen director's cut has been rated R by the MPAA and according to IMDB, will run approximately 28 minutes longer than the theatrical cut. Click one of the following links for a look at each title:

  • Watchmen (Single disc theatrical edition)
  • Watchmen (2-Disc Special Edition Director's Cut)
  • Watchmen (Director's Cut) Blu-ray
  • 300 (The Complete Experience) Blu-ray

The original article with these updates added where necessary follows.

I already alerted you back in April the Watchmen Director's Cut DVD and Blu-ray had received an R-rating like its theatrical counterpart for strong graphic violence, sexuality, nudity and language. Yesterday The Hollywood Reporter revealed Warner was teaming with Facebook for a BD-Live interactive feature with the Blu-ray version that will allow "community screenings" of the film to be linked with your Facebook community. Another Blu-ray feature mentioned was referred to as "Warner Bros. Maximum Movie Mode," which will allow split-screen viewing of "Watchmen" to focus on elements in director Zack Snyder's on-camera commentary.

Well, today we have the above box art as well as some special feature details:

1-Disc DVD: No extras, theatrical cut of the film in separate widescreen and full screen editions.

2-Disc DVD:

  • Watchmen: Director's Cut
  • The Phenomenon: The Comic that Changed Comics
  • Watchmen: Video Journals (over 30 min)
  • Music Video: My Chemical Romance Desolation Row
  • Digital Copy – Theatrical Version

Blu-ray:

  • Watchmen: Director's Cut
  • Warner Bros. Maximum Movie Mode
  • Watchmen: Focus Points (over 30 minutes)
  • BD Live
  • The Phenomenon: The Comic that Changed Comics
  • Real Super Heroes, Real Vigilantes
  • Mechanics: Technologies of a Fantastic World
  • Music Video: My Chemical Romance Desolation Row
  • Digital Copy – Theatrical version

The street date has been confirmed for July 28, making for a release either just after the annual Comi-Con convention in San Diego.

It appears the Watchmen version that integrates The Tales of the Black Freighter into the feature film is yet to come. In my MPAA ratings announcement on April 29 I received word of a rating for Ultimate Watchmen, which is what I am assuming will be the version with the animated Black Freighter instances included.

Sweet. But do you know if the Ultimate Watchmen just has Black Freighter addded on, or is it even more than that?

Yeah I'm not sure if I should get the director's cut, or wait to see what the Ultimate version delivers. I guess I'll have to wait and read blu ray reviews for both. Not sure if the Tales of the Black Freighter incorporated in the movie will make it better overall.

You know, overall I liked Watchmen. It was certainly flawed, and way too long, but I think I'd want to see it again before I give real consideration to buying it.

I'm more interested in the Director's Cut than the Ultimate Edition. The Tales of the Black Freighter worked great in the graphic novel, but I feel in the movie it would stop the action cold.

Definitely waiting for the ultimate edition. The $10 a ticket for the IMAX was enough to hold me over until the $40 version with everything complete comes out. Then we may be complete.

Does the Director's Cut include Tales of the Black Freighter and Under the Hood? If not, are there plans for a complete version that includes those 2 bits incorporated into the movie, as in the book?

@linky: No release dates yet… Most likely end of the year for Christmas shoppers.
