Depp's 'Shantaram' Gets a Writer

Roth penning heroin tale.

It was over a year ago that the announcement came down saying that Johnny Depp would be playing an Australian heroin addict in Shantaram. Depp's character is convicted of robbery and escapes to India, where he reinvents himself as a doctor and now the picture seems to be moving forward a little bit.

The Hollywood Reporter tells us that Eric Roth, the man behind such films as Ali, Forrest Gump and the upcoming Steven Spielberg Oscar-bait flick Munich has come aboard to adapt the script based on the Gregory David Roberts novel "Shantaram".

Warner Bros. and Initial Entertainment Group are behind the picture which they purchased back in October for $2 million.
