Depp Still Searching for ‘Rum’
Johnny takes another stab at Hunter S. Thompson

I know people like Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, but I wasn’t all that thrilled with it even if Johnny Depp was his typical kick ass self. So, when I hear Depp will be searching the mind of Hunter S. Thompson yet again I have my doubts.
This time around Depp will be directed by Bruce Robinson in The Rum Diary. Robinson also wrote the adaptation and Warner Indepenent will distribute the pic.
Depp will play Paul Kemp, a freelance journo writing for a rundown newspaper in 1950s Puerto Rico and surrounded by a bunch of lost souls bent on self-destruction. The journo was 22 when he wrote the autobiographical novel and had yet to develop his trademark gonzo style. It was written in 1959 but not published until 1998.
If you think you heard this story before it is because you have. In May of 2005 I was pretty much typing up this same article. The only difference between then and now is that FilmEngine will not be financing the picture as GK Films and Depp’s Infinitum Nihil outfit will be handling those details.
