Depp in ‘Wonderland’? Is It True?
The Internet rumor machine is a nightmare
While at Comic Con I waited in a lot of lines, and while in those lines you get to hear some crazy conversations. The Star Wars special edition debate is still going on. What if Terminator battled Batman? Should James Franco have played Anakin instead of Hayden? Should RopeofSilicon team up with a certain video sharing provider? Seriously, I heard it all. I even heard one guy say Step Brothers was funny. Yeah, I actually heard someone say that.
However, one thing I heard that made me shake my head more than the other stuff was when someone brought up the rumor that Christian Bale said he would not star in a third Batman movie if the writers brought Robin into the story. It was a rumor that was sourced to WENN, a gossip news feed that is hardly credible. A lot of times they will think of stories to quote that sound real enough and toss them out there. Sites such as IMDb and StarPulse use them as “news” feeds, but that doesn’t make their words gospel. Another such “news” feed is BANG Showbiz and this is the actual source of the latest online rumor saying Johnny Depp will star in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland.
Think about it, it’s highly likely this rumor is true. Depp has starred in six Burton films inlcuding his last three and he is rumored to be starring as Barnabas Collins in Dark Shadows for the helmer. Why wouldn’t one think Depp would be playing the Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland? Hell, there were actually rumors he would star as Alice until that role went to Mia Wasikowska.
This latest BANG Showbiz rumor is being spread via Canada’s MSN/Sympatico gossip page called Celeb Edge and the almighty “source” is giving BANG Showbiz the information. The article gives no quotes from Depp or Burton and reveals nothing I couldn’t have written up yesterday including trumped up source quotes and information a trip to Wikipedia couldn’t have offered up.
I only tell you this because while this rumor could easily turn out to be true, like the WENN Bale quote it most likely was made up based on the high probability that it could be true.
