De Niro, Beckinsale, Barrymore and Rockwell are All ‘Fine’

This could be good, but I bet it will be disastrous

Robert De Niro

Outside of The Good Shepherd I haven’t been impressed with Robert De Niro since Heat back in 1995. The guy has turned into a mediocre actor and yes, I understand Ronin was in 1998, but I didn’t really like that flick. He has either made shitty horror flicks (Godsend, Hide and Seek) or shitty comedies (Analyze This, Meet the Fockers). The Bridge of San Luis Rey was so bad I walked out, and while he was decent in Stardust he was hardly the reason I enjoyed that film. Righteous Kill looks terrible and What Just Happened? has already been shown at film festivals and is yet to be picked up, at least to my knowledge.

So, when I hear De Niro is in a new film my first thought is is it a crime film? When it turns out that it isn’t my second thought is who gives a shit? This latest news falls into the second category, but the addition of Sam Rockwell has me interested.

The film is Everybody’s Fine and De Niro and Rockwell will star alongside Kate Beckinsale and Drew Barrymore in a film in which De Niro will play a widower who realizes that his deceased wife was his only connection to his children. He decides on a whim to take a road trip to reconnect with each of his grown kids, discovering that their lives are far from perfect.

Kirk Jones (Nanny McPhee) is directing from his own script, which he penned based on the Giuseppe Tornatore film Stanno tutti bene. Miramax acquired the rights to the film and production is set to get underway in Connecticut later this month.
