'Couples Retreat' Hauls in $11 Million, but Look at 'Paranormal Activity's Numbers

October 16th delivers Paranormal Activity nationwide

So, with Couples Retreat opening this weekend in 3,000 theaters it is no surprise it opened to $11.5 million on Friday with the expectation of creeping close to that $30 million three-day mark despite awful reviews. When you are the only major opener that's sort of how it tends to go. As such, the big story happens to be Paramount's Paranormal Activity which just hit 1 million demands from folks like yourself and earned the #5 spot at the Friday box-office with $2 million from only 159 theaters on its way to an estimated $5.5 million weekend as reported by Nikki Finke at Deadline.com.

The rest of the box-office is hardly worthy of discussion, but it is notable that now Paramount Pictures will release Paranormal Activity nationwide beginning Friday, October 16th. So get ready to line-up for the fright of your life.

The list of Friday estimates thanks to Nikki Finke are listed below. Laremy will be here on Sunday with the complete weekend wrap-up.

  1. Couples Retreat (Universal) – $11.5 million
  2. Zombieland (Sony) – $4.8 million
  3. Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs (Sony) – $3 million
  4. Toy Story 3D (Disney) – $2 million
  5. Paranormal Activity (Paramount) – $2 million
  6. Surrogates (Disney) – $1.3 million

Couples Retreat was ok for a few laughs, but I kinda wish Zombieland had repeated. I am really excited to see Paranormal Activity making so much from ONLY 159 screens! I don't know if that's unprecedented, but it doesn't happen often. My theater is getting it on the 23rd, and I can't wait to see it at the employee midnight show.

I didn't think that "Couples Retreat" would do so well; it's been getting horrid reviews & this year with comedies, word of mouth has elevated ("The Hangover", "The Proposal") or more often devastated ("Year One", "Land of the Lost") bad comedies. We'll see how this one holds next week.

I'm so excited for "Paranormal Activity" & the major success it's getting. I honestly think that it'll gross more than the big horror flick for the year "Saw VI". It'll release on the 16th, but because "Where the Wild Things Are" comes out then too, I'll be waiting until the week after to see this one. I honestly can't wait.

Sidenote: in the TV spot for "Activity", they quoted your review Brad, saying "This is a film you MUST see in theaters". Congrats dude!

Thank you mu, for your clearly more experienced perspective. Looks like you were right. I agree with you on Paranormal Activity. It has an interesting title.

They have been raising movie ticket prices in Oregon, yet the theaters were full on friday. So the economy is definitely in recovery. What with the pressures of dating, Hollywood doesn't have to worry about putting out more than mediocre product. My opinion.

I'm afraid even to imagine what kind of money PA will make after being unleashed nationwide.

I saw Paranormal Activity this friday and while it was hardly full, it had a really decent crowd of folks. And it was the first showing….

My local theater here in GA has it on 2 screens! I'm leaving here in an hour to see the first showing of the day.

At the AMC 30 here, GA has 16 showings today alone. Guess the theaters lucky enough to get the movie this week are going to make a killing.

I called it! "Paranormal Activity" in the Top 10! But even I didn't predict high enough. I realized this last night when I went to see it at 11:30. It was the 8th showing of the day, and it still sold out. The audience reaction was very positive; everyone, including me, was thoroughly scared by it. Definitely worth seeing!

Holy shit. According to BOM, PA actually made $2,540,000 on Friday, which means it's likely to gross at least $7 million in the whole weekend, which is $44k per screen. Looks like $11k-budgeted 2-year-old indie horror is easily THE box office phenomenon of the year. Guys at Paramount could just sit back, relax and count millions of dollars of pure profit.

I saw it last night. I couldn't agree more with Brad's reviews. Loved it. Best horror film I've seen in a while. For those that haven't seen it yet though, be prepared for a slow build up, be patient.

Barely got any sleep last night, and I still get chills thinking about it.

I am waiting for this movie to be released in Indonesia.
I am so happy knowing this film will be aired here in Indonesia at November.
Gosh, what a long wait, but really happy, how this independent and small budget movie manage to be this year phenomenon
I hope it really deliver the thrills as everybody said since asian horror flicks were mostly scary.
Regards from Indonesia.

I thought it was funny, I have seen a million "Couple's Retreat" commercials barely seeing the African-American couple, but watching "The Cleveland Show" on FOX, it was a different spot, and they where in half of it.

So, Couples made $35 million, and PA made $7M, with $44,5k per screen.
