Competing ‘L.A. Confidential’ Sequels?

Crowe vs. Clooney?

Director Joe Carnahan eluded to this when I interviewed him for Smokin’ Aces and it seems to be a serious deal now as TMZ is reporting that an actual L.A. Confidential sequel, which will put a damper on Carnahan’s White Jazz starring George Clooney, a film he wanted to create as an indirect sequel to 1997 Oscar-winner.

Both L.A. Confidential and White Jazz are film adaptations of the James Ellroy novels of the same name while TMZ is reporting that a direct sequel to L.A. Confidential written by original scripter Brian Helgeland wouldn’t rely on the plot of “White Jazz,” but simply pick up where L.A. Confidential left off: With Lt. Ed Exley (originally played by Guy Pearce), a rising star in the LAPD, and Officer Bud White (originally played by Russell Crowe), now an ex-cop who lives with an ex-whore.

Carnahan has said he talked with Pearce in regards to reprising his role as Exley in White Jazz, but nothing has happened outside of talking.
