Comic Con 2009: Gary Oldman Says 'Batman 3' Expected to Begin Filming in 2010

Is the next Batman only two years away?

Small bit of news year, but at the Comic Con panel for The Book of Eli starring Denzel Washington and Gary Oldman, Oldman was asked about Batman 3 and replied saying:

"I think the next Batman is next year. We start shooting next year for a release in two years. You didn't hear that from me."

He said it with some serious conviction, but it seems a strange way to get the word out. Who knows if there will be an official confirmation later on, but I will have the video of the exact quote in my Warner Bros. panel wrap-up later tonight.

I look forward to seeing the video! Hopefully he's not bullshitting, and that Nolan is coming back to complete the trilogy.

Excellent news. Perhaps that means that we will be finding out more news on the villians and storyline in the near future.

I'm not believing it, because if it's true it'll most likely mean that Nolan won't be in the director's chair, since he likes to take breaks in between directing and promoting films.

I think he's just guessing, I don't know…
Anyway, a 2012 release date for the film seems plausible.

A 2011 release date seems plausible, seeing as BB was 2005, TDK was 2008, that would place Batman 3 in 2011.

I always felt like Nolan had an idea ready to go and that he just wants to make another movie in between. I appreciate that unlike the Spider-Man franchise which basically broke Raimi down by 3, Nolan is taking his time and keeping himself creatively fresh for each film. I seriously doubt that The Dark Knight would've been as good if Nolan was forced right into it after Batman Begins rather than first making The Prestige (which is probably one of the best films of the decade in its own right). I, for one, am majorly looking forward to Inception, so I'm not really in any rush until concrete news about the film starts to come out (casting, story, etc).

I'm not getting too excited by this news though, because Oldman took a few steps back in an AICN interview, basically saying it could still be another 2 or 3 years. I'm still betting that either right before or right after Inception is released we'll hear official info about Batman 3.

I hope that is right. I think they should cast Sarah Michelle Gellar or Helena Bonham Carter to play harley quinn, and they should alter her story only to be the woman of the riddler instead of the joker. Johny Depp should be the Riddler. And the Penquin should take over the mob. Leave the penquin for the next movie as well, at least…

I can't see having that many villains in one movie working out very well.

No Nolan, No Bale, No Deal.

I hear people knocking Zack Snyder's name about as a contender to replace Nolan as a Batman director. I found Watchmen to be lightly entertaining, but please God no. No depth whatsoever.

I really hope that Nolan will return and deliver one of the few great (or worthy) third installments in history, joining the hallowed ranks of The Bourne Ultimatum, and…uh… well, I liked At World's End and Back To the Future Part III, anyway. And Revenge of the Sith was the best of the prequels.

Is it really that surprising considering that Batman 3 was in Nolan's Inception contract? Anyways I trust Oldman and its nice to hear Nolan's 3rd Batman film is coming sooner rather then later. Now I can wait until after Inception (Which is my must see film for 2010.) for more batman news.

I'm very skeptical when it comes to a 3rd DK film. The Dark Knight was perfect and I just highly doubt that magic can be made again. And people asking for the joker to return. He shouldn't… Heath Ledger made that role.

@Scott: I agree Scott. Bale is in because he wants to keep working after that tantrum and Batman is his one main ticket after Terminator. Nolan hasn't commented on any release or filming date and is just working on Inception which will be due out next July. I don't think Nolan has worked on the Batman 3 script but has most likely discussed possibilities for a story with his brother, producer, and actors.

The soonest I see a release for Batman 3 is July 2012 because it will take a while to recover and write a new Batman and not to let the story of TDK down. Also since Ledger left a huge gap in the franchise with talent, WB will have to hire someone who is equal if not better in talent; a true character actor like Depp. So the schedules will also have to be free.

I'll keep hoping though, but maybe Nolan will never do a 3rd Batman, at which point, the franchise will lose the plot perspective and will be based on action.

@DarkFoot25: @DarkFoot25: many people including myself still believe batman begins was an equally good movie as TDK, ledger or not, if nolan is on board you can expect a good movie, hes never let me down as a movie fan, and gary oldman isnt the type who would speak on assumptions, he rarely gives any interviews in the first place, maybe theyre keeping it hush hush, more media coverage means trouble for them.

@Anonymous' Friend: Bale will be in the next "Batman" because he must act in 3 Batman by agreement but if the productors wanted, they could fire him easily
