Cohen Firms Up ‘Sweeney’ Role and Readies Bruno

Cohen, Burton and Depp... quite a combo

Sacha Baron Cohen’s profile is so high right now it is immeasurable. After the unexpected breakout success of Borat it seems that is all I hear about on a daily basis and now he finds himself in Tim Burton’s next picture Sweeney Todd.

The film is an adaptation of the Stephen Sondheim musical in which Johnny Depp stars in the title role while Cohen will play Signor Adolfo Pirelli, a barber who becomes the nemesis of Sweeney Todd. Todd’s the barber who teams with the murderess Mrs. Lovett (Helena Bonham Carter) to kill people, grind them up and use them in her meat pies.

Variety reports Cohen will only be putting in a couple weeks of work on the project.

The story goes on to say that Cohen has just begun working out the story beats of “Bruno,” the feature he’ll make for Universal, playing the Austrian fashion reporter character he created for “Da Ali G Show.” About a week back this was not a sure thing, but it is reported that the film is on course to shoot next year.
