Chris Pine IS Captain Kirk in ‘Star Trek’

At least we finally have an official word

Chris Pine

Well folks, the official word has finally come in from director Joe Carnahan via his blog stating that Chris Pine, who was going to play Junior Stemmons in Carnahan’s White Jazz has opted to instead boldly go where William Shatner has gone before and take the role as Captain James T. Kirk in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek reboot.

Carnahan understands the situation completely (how couldn’t he?) saying, “You don’t get opportunities like that often and I told him as long as he could control as much of that process as possible and not get sucked into doing lesser sequels as a result of taking this gig, then good luck and God bless.” The director goes on to say that he has already reserved a spot for Pine in Killing Pablo, which he hopes to shoot immediately after White Jazz with George Clooney.

Why, again, are you so excited about this? The more I keep hearing about it the more I find myself silently dreading it. It all seems a bit pointless to me. Loved the original series, adored STAR TREKs II, IV and IV (and have a weak place in my heart for III), and even am willing to admit parts of FIRST CONTACT and some episodes of THE NEXT GENERATION or worthy of praise. But, seriously now, do we have to re-boot everything? When will it ever end?

I admit, I am probably getting my hopes up, but I like what Abrams has done to this point and I like the original series. I am putting a lot of faith in them and assuming they are casting the right people based on the auditions. I am trying to be more optimistic and this seemed as good a place as any to place that optimism. Yay!

REBOOT IT! If it is good I hope it never ends.

Brad - am I the only one a little ticked off that everyone is calling the cast ‘teen Trekkers’ ?

Seriously. Almost all are in their 30’s.

Really? I haven’t seen anyone calling them teen Trekkers, but that is definitely not accurate. Quinto is 30, Pine is 27, Bana is 39, Pegg is 37, Saldana is 29, Yelchin is 18 and Nimoy is 130. Only one teen in there by my count and Chekov was a youngster on the crew so it works. Also, I think Yelchin is a great actor and along with Quinto one of the best choices of the bunch.
