‘Cheating Death’ Sounds Pretty Cool

From traffic jams to coaster accident.

Quite honestly the massive car crash scene at the beginning of Final Destination 2 made the movie for me, that scene combined with a home theater system is simply amazing, and it seems the Final Destination boys are rising to the challenge as they gave SCI FI Wire a sneak peek at the opening disaster for Cheating Death: Final Destination 3.

James Wong is returning to the Final Destination stage in the capacity as writer, director and producer and his partner Glen Morgan told SCI FI Wire that the opening scene will take place on a roller coaster and will be shot in a way that hasn’t been seen before. “It’s not necessarily groundbreaking, but it hasn’t been done before, you know, in this way,” Morgan said in an interview during a break in filming on the sequel’s Vancouver, B.C., set on April 13… [SCI FI Wire] viewed a “pre-visualization” of the sequence, or animated storyboard, which takes place on a fictional roller coaster with a 200-foot drop, corkscrews and a high loop. The speeding coaster loses hydraulic pressure, causing restraining harnesses to relax and wheels to fall off. As the coaster accelerates into its various turns and whirls, high school students fly out, fall, get run over and wind up hanging upside down by their fingers. Some die gruesome deaths.

The film takes place six years after the events of Final Destination, and Wendy (Winstead), a high school senior, has a premonition of a fatal amusement park accident involving herself and all her friends. When the premonition proves true, those who survive the accident are forced to deal with the repercussions of escaping their fate. But fate is not so easily thwarted, and as Wendy and Kevin (Merriman) desperately try to interpret the clues that might save lives, one-by-one their friends meet fantastically gruesome ends.

Names already involved in the cast are Ryan Merriman, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jamie Isaac Conde, Gina Holden, Alexander Kalugin, Dustin Milligan and Texas Battle.

Morgan went on to tell Sci-Fi, “I don’t know if we ever successfully pull it off, but Jim and I like to have themes… And this one, for the Wendy character, is about loss of control. … You got a roller coaster, [and] psychologists will tell you that’s why people hate ‘em. Why you’re afraid of them. Or why you’re afraid to fly. Because you have no control. And for me, … when I’m going up any roller coaster, I just say, ‘I want out.’ But I’m not getting out. That’s just torture. … It’s unbearable. I’m nervous talking about it. … If you look at death, that’s [the same thing]. … All of a sudden. I feel that if it wants us, [it's going to get us]. I think that’s why the franchise kind of works.”
