Charlize Theron Joins ‘The Road’

Latest Cormac McCarthy adaptation gets an Oscar winner

Charlize Theron

Hopefully most of you have come to know David Frank, our new editorial writer on the site, and if you haven’t just read his latest editorial in ‘The Shallow End’ and you will quickly be acquainted. Anyway, he has already led me to believe that Cormac McCarthy’s “The Road” is just about the greatest thing ever, and while it is on my short list of books to read I haven’t quite thumbed through the Oprah Book Club selection just yet.

Therefore, this latest news should bring a smile to David’s face and quite possibly a frown as well. For starters Charlize Theron is set to join Viggo Mortensen in the adaptation, which centers on a man who embarks on a nightmarish road trip after a nuclear explosion in an attempt to transport his son to safety while fending off cannibals. Viggo is apparently playing the lead character, a role once thought to be owned by Guy Pearce, while Theron will play the wife of Mortensen’s character.

Word is that Theron’s role is quite small and will be seen mostly in flashback. However, like David, Theron is a fan of the book and wanted to be in the film for that reason, the size of the role didn’t matter.

The Road is being directed by The Proposition helmer John Hillcoat from a screenplay by Joe Penhall. Shooting is set to begin next month.

For those that haven’t put it together, Cormac McCarthy wrote the book of which No Country for Old Men was adapted from.
