Charlize Theron is ‘Burning’ for Arriaga

Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu's boy is all grown up

I know Charlize Theron’s name grabs your attention, but this news is more about how Guillermo Arriaga is set to make his directorial debut with The Burning Plain, a drama of which Theron is set to star in.

Arriaga, for those that don’t know, is the guy who wrote Alejandro González Iñárritu’s three most popular and well received films Amores Perros, 21 Grams and Babel. All of which were nominated for Oscars with Babel being the lone wolf that took home one for Original Score after being nominated for seven including one for Arriaga’s screenplay. Unfortunately Arriaga and Iñárritu had something of a falling out and I don’t think they will be working together again.

The most recognizeable thing about all of Arriaga’s stories is that they are all depressing and I can only assume this one won’t be any different when he is quoted in Variety saying, “There are very intense love stories here that take place in different places and times, with characters trying to find the healing powers of love, forgiveness and redemption.”

In the tilm Theron will play the role of Sylvia, who tries to find common ground with her parents after a turbulent childhood. I can already see the Academy Award push for this one with tears streaming down Theron’s beautiful face.

Arriaga, of course, penned the screenplay and just like those other three films I mentioned it will consist of thematically connected storylines.

The drama will shoot in November.
