Casting Notes: April 30, 2007

Some interesting pieces for once in this round-up

There are a few tidbits that leaked on the net this weekend and there just isn’t enough info to turn them into huge articles, so here are the quick and condensed version as some news comes in from both Variety and VH1.

First off Lambert Wilson may best be known now as the Merovingian from the Matrix sequels and he is ready to star in another sci-fi thriller alongside Vin Diesel as he has joined the cast of Babylon A.D. for director Mathieu Kassovitz. The film is inspired by Maurice Dantec’s novel “Babylon Babies,” the story is set in the near future and concerns genetic manipulation. In the book, a mercenary charged with delivering a young woman from Russia to Canada learns that she has been manipulated by a synthetic virus and what lies inside her could doom the human race.

Next we learn that Terry Crews is joining the cast of The Night Watchman alongside Keanu Reeves, Forest Whitaker and the recently revealed casting addition of Fantastic Four star Chris Evans. David Ayer is helming the pic which centers on a veteran LAPD cop (Keanu Reeves) who turns to alcohol after the death of his wife. The cop is forced to go up against his longtime mentor (Whitaker) when he is implicated in the execution of a fellow officer. Crews told VH1, “This is Keanu in one of his darkest, darkest roles. You will not believe how dark this thing is going to get. This is a hard-core, L.A. story.” He also gives the lowdown on his character saying, “I’m the LAPD spokesman who basically learns that there’s a lot of dirt going on,” he grinned. “It comes back to bite all of us, and Keanu is in the middle.” Sign me up for this one, it sounds good!

Kirsten Dunst revealed that she is waiting for a script to be finished on Sweet Relief, a drama based on the true story of activist-turned-aid worker Marla Ruzicka. The flick will star Dunst as the American-born founder of the Campaign for Innocent Victims in Conflict, whose post-9/11 calling put her in the Middle East counting civilian casualties and assisting Iraqi victims, before being killed by a car bomber near Baghdad International Airport in 2005. Dunst has a lot to say about the film, click here to give it a read.

Finally, those silly rumors that Kate Beckinsale was being considered for the lead role in the Barbarella remake have been squashed as she tells IGN, “I just found out myself today… It’s thrilling! I’ve never heard anything about it before today. One of the [Whiteout] crewmembers told me.”
