CASTING NEWS: February 20, 2007

Zahn, Snow, Grace and Bousman

The day after President's Day looks like it is going to be slow rolling as well, but don't worry, the Oscars are just around the corner. However, there were a few casting tidbits to mention, here you go:

Little cutie Brittany Snow is set to play the lead in Prom Night for Sony's Screen Gems. The film is a remake of the 1980 horror which starred Jamie Lee Curtis and centered around a masked killer who stalks four teens responsible for the accidential death of a child six years earlier at their high school's senior prom. Nelson McCormick is directing. [Variety]

Steve Zahn has been cast opposite Amy Adams, Alan Arkin, Emily Blunt, Clifton Collins, Jr., Eric Christian Olsen and Kevin Chapman in Christine Jeffs' dark comedy Sunshine Cleaning, a film in which Zahn plays Mac, a married police officer having an affair with Rose Lorkowski (Adams), the co-owner of a firm that cleans up messy crime scenes. Arkin and Blunt play Rose's relatives and partners in the family business. Filming began last Friday in New Mexico. [The Hollywood Reporter]

Who is Andrew Garfield? Who the hell knows, but he is set to star in Robert Redford's Lions for Lambs alongside the likes of Redford, Tom Cruise, and Meryl Streep. The pic was written by Matthew Michael Carnahan, the story features three interconnected plotlines: a congressman who interacts with a journalist; an idealistic professor who attempts to inspire a privileged student in his class; and a pair of American soldiers wounded in enemy territory in Afghanistan, one of whom is the professor's former student. You will first see Garfield in The Other Bolyen Girl which stars Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman for Columbia Pictures. [The Hollywood Reporter]

Former "Lost" star Maggie Grace has found herself in a role opposite Liam Neeson in the Luc Besson produced thriller Taken for director Pierre Morel. Grace is set to play the estranged daughter of Neeson's character who is kidnapped and forced into the slave trade. Neeson's character is a former spy who uses his skills to rescue her. Shooting begins this month in Paris. [The Hollywood Reporter]

Tony Kaye is reportedly set to replace Samuel Bayer as director on the Sam Jackson and Bruce Willis starrer Black Water Transit with filming set to begin in April in New Orleans. The film follows the divergent agendas of criminals, cops and lawyers as they collide over a shipment of illegal firearms and a double homicide. Willis plays Earl Pike, a criminal who tries to get his family's illegal gun collection to a safe haven. [Production Weekly]

Lionsgate has made a not-at-all-surprising move and went ahead and brought back Saw II and Saw III helmer Darren Bousman to direct the fourth film in the faltering franchise. Saw IV will begin production on April 16 in Toronto. Pic will be released worldwide Oct. 26. Lionsgate is calling the franchise "the most successful horror series in history," but I am not sure what they are basing that on and if rate of inflation is involved or what, but based on how bad Saw III was I can't see this crap pile staying on top for much longer. There is currently no official synopsis. [Lionsgate]

Michael Keaton is also set to take the director's chair in what would be his helming debut with The Merry Gentleman, an indie drama that will star Keaton and newcomer Keith Kupferer. Filming in Chicago is scheduled to start March 6th wrapping mid April. [Production Weekly]
