The Casting Couch: September 29, 2006

Big batch of names you know... go figure!

After the Robert Downey Jr. announcement that he will be playing the title role in Iron Man you may think this edition of The Casting Couch would be a little lackluster. Luckily there are people in this world that think comicbook adaptations are not the end all be all in movies, in fact our first announcement has to do with a movie that I am more excited about than any comicbook movie that has been announced, The Bourne Ultimatum.

David Strathairn has signed on for a pair of roles as he nabbed the lead role in Universal Pictures' The Spiderwick Chronicles as well as the leader of a secret operation which is hunting Matt Damon's character in The Bourne Ultimatum! Spiderwick is being directed by Mark Waters and centers on three children who move to their great uncle's ancient mansion only to discover a magical book which opens up a new world. Filming dates on both project were not mentioned. [Variety]

Next comes news from LatinoReview who has received an unconfirmed rumor that Chris Evans will be starring opposite Wilmer Valderrama in the feature film adaptation of the hit '80s cop show "CHiPs" as Jon Baker, Ponch's partner. The source claims the news comes from a small celebration in which Wilmer is quoted saying, "Meet Ponch's new partner." The news is unconfirmed so stay tuned for some kind of official announcement if this turns up true. [LatinoReview]

Even more recognizeable names have joined James Mangold's 3:10 to Yuma as Peter Fonda, Gretchen Mol and Dallas Roberts join Russell Crowe and Christian Bale in the remake of the 1957 Glenn Ford starrer. Filming begins October 23 in New Mexico on a production budget of $50 million. The film was scripted by Stuart Beattie, Michael Brandt and Derek Haas. The story revolves around a desperado who is caught by a sheriff determined to bring the outlaw in. Sheriff's plans go awry when the desperado's accomplices stage an ambush. [Variety]

Efren Ramirez is still trying to shed that Pedro moniker, but it might be difficult to lose the typecasting as MoviePictureFilm has learned that Ramirez will be starring in the entirely unnecessary remake of Revenge of the Nerds. Ramirez told the site the news in an interview in which he revealed he will be playing a foreign exchange student from Spain named Santiago, but he stresses he is completely different from his Napoleon Dynamite role, "No he's completely different. As an actor it's important for me to do different roles because then people go 'Yeah, of course!'. You don't want to do the same thing because people will get bored of you." [MoviePictureFilm]

Sigourney Weaver and Kate Bosworth are in negotiations to star in The Girl in the Park for writer/director and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright David Auburn. The film is a drama about a woman still traumatized by the disappearance of her 3-year-old daughter 15 years ago. When she meets a troubled young woman, her pain resurfaces along with the hope that the woman may be her missing child. Shooting is currently expected to start in New York in November. [Variety]

Ice Cube has found himself another comedy as New Line has set the star to play a social climber whose aspirations are threatened by a youth who shows up and calls him daddy in a currently untitled film. Richard Murphy is scripting the film. [Variety]
