Tons of little goodies today
Interesting news here for all you Stiles-files as Julia Stiles is taking on a different role, this time as writer and director for a short film called Raving, which is based on a story in Elle magazine’s October “Personal Style” issue, “The Dress That Changed My Life.” Plum Pictures is producing while Zooey Deschanel and Bill Irwin star in the film that explores the connection between a young woman and a lonely, disassociated older man after a chance encounter on a New York street corner. Next up we learn that Terminator 3 helmer Jonathan Mostow is set to direct Sub-Mariner, an adaptation of one of Marvel Comics’ oldest superheroes, for Universal Pictures. In the comic, the Sub-Mariner’s real name is Prince Namor, a half-man/half-amphibian from the underwater kingdom of Atlantis. An anti-hero, he frequently finds himself helping the human race as much as he fights it when humans pollute the waters. The movie’s take will see a young man discovering he actually is a prince from Atlantis, with him turning out to be the key man in a brewing war between the underwater world and the modern surface world. Kyra Sedgwick is going to star opposite The Rock in The Game Plan for Disney. The production is set to begin on September 24 in Boston with Andy Fickman directing. The film centers on a football player who learns that he has a daughter and follows his journey to become a father. Sedgwick plays The Rock’s ruthless, over-the-top sports agent who doesn’t care about the daughter. [The Hollywood Reporter]
It was announced last night that the Focus Features production Evening was beginning principal photography and along with the announcement we also learned that Vanessa Redgrave, Claire Danes, Toni Collette, Patrick Wilson and Hugh Dancy the likes of Tony Award winner Natasha Richardson, Dame Eileen Atkins (Gosford Park), screen newcomer Mamie Gummer, Ebon Moss-Bachrach (The Lake House), five-time Academy Award nominee Glenn Close, and two-time Academy Award winner Meryl Streep are all joining the production which is being directed by Lajos Koltai. Alanis Morissette is going to have a three-episode stint on “Nip/Tuck” as Poppy, the love interest of anesthesiologist Dr. Liz Cruz (Roma Maffia). Morissette’s first episode is slated to air Oct. 31. [Variety]
Nikki Cox has been cast in the indie flick Lonely Streets a story of a bumbling private detective hired to protect the king of rock ‘n’ roll, who faked his death years ago and is planning a comeback. Cox plays a tabloid reporter following the story. Peter Ettinger directs. [Variety]
Michael Madsen and Camille Solari will star in the thriller Money to Burn for Roger Mende. The film follows an aspiring hip-hop group that gets mixed up in a counterfeiting scandal. Mauria Carradine also stars. Lensing began Sept. 1 in Thailand and India. [Variety]
